“Toto, we are not in Kansas anymore.” These iconic words spoken by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz seem to sum up how I feel when I flip through the pages of a J. Crew catalog or browse through their website. This mecca of preppy basics has become a treasure trove of fashion forward pieces with a classic twist.
My current obsession from J. Crew exemplify this new fashion forward slant and also channel a little Dorothy too. These glitter gilded t-strap shoes are glitzy and glamorous and are just the perfect thing for a night of dancing. The silhouette is straight from the 1920’s and has a flapper girl feel but the glitter reminds me of the bejeweled ruby slippers worn by Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and brought back in style by Miu Miu last season and now available in a dance-worthy version at J. Crew. Throw them on with a simple black strapless dress and gather the girls for a night on the town! Available in gold or silver at www.jcrew.com.
A bit of trivia: according to the L. Frank Baum novel, The Wonderful World of Oz, the slippers Dorothy wore, were actually silver in color. When the Technicolor movie version was being made, it was decided that ruby slippers would photograph better than silver and the rest is history.
