Shiny Coat

I am a mix master in the wash rack, often carrying a bucket full of lotions of potions to use on my horse with the intent of achieving a shiny, glossy hair coat and long, full tail. A good shiny coat starts from the inside and good quality feed paired with minerals (from Platinum Performance and SmartPak) are the building blocks to high-gloss. There are also many products out there that can help add extra shine and smoothness. I am always trying out the latest and greatest and one recent acquisition at my local feed store seriously exceeded my expectations.

That recent acquisition was EQyss Premier Color Intensifying Equine Shampoo. This natural, botanical shampoo is the only equine shampoo that leaves the hair shaft completely clean, not coated with wax, oil, petroleum by-products, silicone or synthetic polymers which are found in all other equine shampoos, thereby letting the hair accept more moisture which will produce amazing shine. It soaps up beautifully and rinses out easily, eliminates dry flakes and intensifies color. It left my horses hair coat super shiny and very soft and even days later his bay color seemed richer. Juicy Lips

My husband had me help answer phones at his office a few weeks ago and I spent a fair amount of time online shopping. Sephora was my boredom breaker of choice and I stocked up on all of my faves as well as tried a few new things.

The product I was most excited to get and try was Yves St Laurent’s Volupte Sheer Candy lipstick. It was lauded high and low by pretty much every beauty editor in print and online. Since I am a sucker for a good sales pitch, I just had to have my own shiny silver tube of “the best summer lipstick” that will make your lips look juicy while also creating world peace. I figured that was a lot for a lipstick to live up to but I was willing to sacrifice my lips for science and give it a try.

I am happy to report that the beauty editors had it right; it is the best summer lipstick. Each tube of fruit-filled color swipes on a sheer wash of berry-liciousness, leaving your lips soft, shiny and like you just took a bite out of a ripe piece of fruit. My only complaint is that it wears more like a gloss than a lipstick, meaning it does not have a lot of staying power. But hey, in this heat I am not sure I could take a thick lipstick and this fills the void nicely!

Yves St Laurent Volupte Sheer Candy ($30) is available in 6 colors (I recommend the Mouthwatering Berry and Luscious Cherry) at

My best friend is a major beauty junkie and she recently shared a few of her favorite must-haves with me. Included in my box of beauty goodies was a tube of First Aid Beauty’s Ultimate Repair Cream. It is beyond amazing at quenching dry skin!

Just one little dab and any dry skin vanishes, leaving soft, smooth and glowing skin. It also works great when added to your daily lotion to maintain moisturized skin. My legs get so dry in the summer from the heat and constant use of self-tanners but this cream combats the dryness. Add this to your shopping cart next time you are browsing

Available in a tub ($28) or an on-the-go tube ($12). Put one on your bathroom counter and one in your purse.

The Bee’s Knees

Harsh, dark lipstick seems to look out of place in the summer time, clashing with light and airy clothing and melting into a hot mess in the summer sun. Stash your favorite lipsticks until fall and swipe on a tinted lip balm. Your lips will appreciate the extra moisture and you will love the rosy sheen of color they lend to your pucker.

My newest addiction in the form of a tinted lip balm comes from the Guru Of All Things Organic, Burt’s Bees. Their tinted lip balm is full of organic and good for you ingredients, as well as a hint of color. They leave your lips soft, full and juicy colored. There is no gloss or glitter and they glide on without leaving your lips sticky. Available in 6 shades from neutral to pink to red. I currently own Rose and Red Dahlia and plan to add the rest to my makeup drawer, purse and car. Available online at

PS Not a paid advertisement, I just wanted to share my favorite lip balm.

EUREKA!* I have found the perfect red lipstick with amazing staying power!

Let me tell you, I have been searching high and low for the perfect shade of red that stays put for a very long time.

The problem I find with reds is that they go on great but start to fade, bleed or just rub off, leaving your lips half red after an hour. With normal shades of pink, coral or brown this isn’t a problem because they blend in and look okay but, with a bold shade like red I demand serious stay put power!

L’Oreal’s Infallible Le Rouge Lip Color in Ravishing Red has serious staying power, goes on smooth and leaves your lips a bold red. I wore it for the first time last night while hosting a  mother’s day dinner and it stayed on through blueberry lemonade chillers (without leaving a red stain on the glass), chips and salsa, chicken fajitas and cupcakes. I also wiped my lips with reckless abandon and it stayed put! Don’t let it’s drugstore price scare you off, it works better than any high-end brand of red that I have tried (and oh I have tried them all, I have an entire drawer full of half-used red lipsticks).

*Eureka has been exclaimed from the lips of excited people for hundreds of years as a way to express triumph on a discovery. This time it was exclaimed from my very red lips!

It’s the red lipstick most often seen on Gwen Stefani and Jennifer Lopez.

For Your Eyes Only

Occasionally my two loves (horses and fashion) collide to create something magical, at least in my eyes!

This time I can thank Paperself for my newest horse inspired obsession. Paperself is a London design firm that creates whimsical, intricate false eyelashes based on Chinese paper-cutting techniques. These dainty horse-themed lashes are stunning and will certainly make a statement. If you aren’t horse obsessed they also have a brilliant collection of non-horsey eyelashes. Available online at

Cheap Trick: Lipstick

I found my new favorite lipstick on one of my favorite food blogs (The Pioneer Woman). I am hooked on Maybelline’s ColorSensational Lip Color because it combines amazing, long lasting color with a creamy, moisturizing texture. Your lips stay soft, hydrated and full of color. Plus, it costs $5! Buy one in every color, available at your local drugstore or grocery store.

New Year, New You

Happy New Year! I have never been big on making New Year’s resolutions but this year I am offering a few fashion related resolutions to help make you look and feel beautiful all year long. These are simple, easy things you can do that can make a big difference.

1. Mix Up Your Routine: We all get stuck in a beauty rut, wearing the same colors over and over again. Get out of the rut by buying a new lipstick in a shade lighter or darker than what you normally wear and by adding black eyeliner to your eye makeup routine (if you already wear eyeliner daily try using different colors like, charcoal, brown, purple or navy). These two simple things will perk up your look and polish your face.

2. Take Care Of Your Skin: Get serious about taking care of your skin, wear sunscreen on your face everyday and invest in a good quality anti-aging regimen. Try a wide variety of products until you find the perfect combo. Wash off your makeup every evening before bed.

3. Buy A Great Fitting Pair Of Jeans: If you still haven’t found the perfect pair of jeans, don’t give up! Take your most honest friend to a large department store that carries a wide variety of brands and styles and spend as long as it takes trying on everything. You will find the perfect pair, it just takes kissing a lot of frogs! You can never go wrong with a dark denim, mid-rise bootcut style, universally flattering.

4. Spend The Money On Alterations: It amazes me how many women think that everything they buy should fit them perfectly off the rack. Not True! That is usually not the case, if you love something but it needs a bit of tweeking take it to a good tailor and pay to have it altered so it fits you perfectly. Eventually, your wardrobe will look like it was custom-made for you.

5. Follow Trends To A Degree: Read up on the trends each season but choose wisely which you will invest in, stick to what makes you happy and flatters your figure. Invest in classic, well-fitting pieces and add in less expensive trendy items to look current. Don’t forget, skip a trend altogether if it looks stupid on you, (ie This Spring nudes and neutral colors are everywhere but look very bad on my pale skin, so as much as I love them, they will have no place in my closet).

Happy Fashionable New Year!

Best Of Beauty 2010: Part 2

I covered all my favorite skin care products in Best Of Beauty 2010: Part 1 and now it is time to move on to makeup. I have always believed that you should have fun with makeup, don’t be afraid to experiment with new colors, trends and products.

Makeup is one of the true joys we can experience as women. I once read a quote from a makeup artist who said, “It is better to be remembered as the person who always wears red lipstick than the person no one remembers because they try to blend in and look bland.”

My favorite makeup brands and a few of my tried and true colors that always work. Just a side note: I am fair skinned with blonde hair and blue eyes, so not all the colors I list may work on you.

Powder/Foundation: MAC Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation, I have used this since high school, it provides great, natural looking coverage without looking cakey or powdery. I have tried many foundations and powders and always go back to this.

Blush: Bobbi Brown Blush in Sand Pink, a soft, light-weight powder that gives my cheeks a pink glow.

Bronzer: Benefit 10, this bronzing and highlighting face powder duo is just perfect for adding a little color to fair skin.

Eyeshadow: tie between Josie Maran Eyeshadow and Bare Escentuals eyeshadow, I have sensitive eyelids and these are the only two brands that do not irritate my skin. Lucky for me they are both amazing products, providing a wide range of colors and staying power. Josie Maran favorite colors: Pewter and Beach and Bare Minerals favorite colors: Drama, Disco and Night Owl. I also loved Bobbi Brown eyeshadows before they irritated my eyes, the best selection of everyday colors.

Mascara: Estee Lauder Double Wear Zero-Smudge Lengthening Mascara, this is one area where I have tried a serious amount of mascaras, never quite finding one I loved until I received this one as a free sample. It is beyond amazing, gives me extra long full lashes with 15 hour wear with no smudges. It looks just applied after a long day in the barn working and bathing horses.

Eyeliner: tie between Estee Lauder Artist’s Eye Pencil and L’Oreal Lineur Intense Liquid Eyeliner, the eye pencil goes on smooth and smudges beautifully for everyday wear and the liquid liner is dramatic and intense for special occasions.

Lip Balm: Fresh Sugar Plum Tinted Lip Treatment, gives lips a plummy glow while protecting and moisturizing.

Lipgloss: L’Oreal Infallible Lip Gloss, smooth and creamy with amazing 6 hour staying power.

Lipstick: tie between MAC Lipstick and Chanel Rouge Coco Hydrating Lip Cream, I love, love lipstick and try so many colors and brands but my favorites always tend to come from MAC and Chanel. They both provide great coverage and staying power while also keeping my lips soft and natural looking. Favorite MAC colors: O and Russian Red and Favorite Chanel Colors: Mademoiselle and Rivoli.

Miscellaneous Favorites:

Perfume: tie between Balenciaga and Givenchy Very Irresistible, every time I wear violet scented Balenciaga I get compliments, like seriously daily compliments on how good I smell which is kind of weird but nice. Givenchy Irresistible is a rose infused fresh floral with a hint of powder, sexy and lingering.

Makeup Brushes: tie between Bobbi Brown and Bare Escentuals, both make high-quality brushes that get the job done.

What are your favorite makeup brands and colors?

Best Of Beauty 2010: Part 1

They say the first step to recovery is to admit you have a problem. Well, dear faithful readers, I am an addict and Sephora is my dealer. I am a certified beauty junkie, Sephora calls my name, tantalizing my senses with a rainbow of colors and smells. I am obsessed with trying new beauty products and my bathroom drawers and shelves are filled to the limits. This is one habit I refuse to kick and therefore decided to share my favorite beauty products with you.

From an admitted beauty junkie, here is my list of my absolute favorite beauty items, some old tried and true favorites and new rock stars.

Face and Body Products:

Face Cleanser:  Caudalie Gentle Cleanser, amazing creamy cleanser that leaves skin soft, clean and smooth.

Face Exfoliator: Boscia Smoothing Facial Polish, a gentle scrub that leaves skin glowing while also being natural and preservative free.

Zit Zapper: I use Boscia’s Clear Complexion Cleanser and Clear Complexion Treatment together to zap the occasional breakout, both are mild yet effective and all natural.

Face Moisturizer: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, I have been using this product since I was 10 years old, the perfect moisturizer.

Anti-Aging: Caudalie Vinosource Riche and Patricia Wexler MMPi Skin Regenerating Serum, both help diminish fine lines while firming and plumping my skin.

Sunscreen: tie between La Roche-Posay Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizing Cream with Sunscreen (I wear it everyday, a lightweight, non greasy sunscreen) and Coppertone Water Babies SPF 70 (I wear it when I am outside in the summer, super potent and protective).

Body Lotion: Jason Hand and Body Therapy Vanilla Lotion, a thick moisturizing lotion that is pure, organic and natural, plus it leaves a light scent of vanilla, like a cupcake.

Body Scrub: tie between Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish (gives you the softest skin ever) and Philosophy’s The Gingerbread Man (smells amazing).

Self-Tanning: Lancome Flash Bronzer, gives you that just spent a week at the beach look, creates an all over, even, natural looking tan.

Hand Cream: Aveeno Intense Relief Hand Cream, I wear this every night before bed and I wake with soft, smooth hands, which is a miracle considering they take a beating each day in the barn.

Stay tuned for Part 2: Makeup. What are your can’t live without beauty products?
