Fashion Wishes 2012

Happy New Year! I can’t believe another year has come and gone! This new year has got me reflecting on the past and future of fashion and I have a few fashion wishes for the new year. Just a few items and trends that I wish would change in the upcoming year.

Number 1: Goodbye mile-high, platform stripper shoes. Hello ladylike heels. Manolo Blahnik happens to agree with me too!

Dainty is Divine

Number 2: Designer Collaborations: I am just so over the much-hyped designer collaborations which often produces inferior, cheap clothes (priced higher then their quality even suggests due to the designer’s name). You’re not fooling anyone, everyone knows you bought that Missoni sweater at Target or that Karl Lagerfeld dress at Macy’s. Plus, half the stuff shows up on e-bay.

Karl Lagerfeld’s Collection for Macy’s was the worst!

Number 3: Real Housewives Hair/Kardashian Hair: You know the type, long fake waves of hair cascading down overly-tanned shoulders. The look is totally unoriginal and no one should aspire to look like any of these women. Jennifer Aniston’s bob and Emma Watson’s cut just look fresher and more unique.

Just Say No!

Better:

Number 4: This last fashion wish is sadly just a pipe dream but maybe someday designers, editors and photographers will learn to embrace the female form and stop using overly-skinny anorexic models and instead learn to design clothes that fit a wider range of shapes and sizes thus celebrating women. I am not talking about just plus-sized models but models that wear a size 6, 8 or 10, average size.

What are your fashion wishes for 2012? New Trends? Old Trends?

Warm Up

Winter has just begun and we are facing some of the coldest weeks of the year, brrrr! One thing is for sure, no matter the weather or temperature my horse still needs to be ridden and worked everyday. When the mercury dips and the wind howls I reach for my winter breeches and bundle up. My trusty winter breeches from Kerrits and Irideon help keep me extra warm in the saddle.

I bought my first pair of Irideon Wind Pro Riding Breeches last winter and have worn them like crazy, adding two more pairs along the way. They are the riding equivalent of your favorite soft, fleecey sweatpants. Stretchy, wind and mud resistant outer give way to a cozy Polartec fleece inside. Thick and warm without being overly bulky, you will wear them to ride in as well as work in the barn. Available online at EquestrianCollections.com.

Kerrits Sit Tight N Warm Breeches are the newest addition to my winter riding wardrobe and let me tell you, it was love at first wear. They are also insulated with soft, plush fleece and feature a wind resistant outer that will protect you when frosty weather strikes. The flat, wide elastic waistband is comfortable and flattering (while holding you in, in all the right places). Available online at Kerrits.com.

Straight and Narrow

I am a huge fan of Paige Denim and recently added a new pair to my closet that I am obsessed with. The Hidden Hills Straight jean will change your life! Well, that may be an overstatement but you will certainly love wearing them and that will make you happy. This high rise, straight leg jean has a double button waistband that holds you in while eliminating muffin top. It also contains enough stretch to make them incredibly comfortable while keeping their shape in tact, no baggy bums here. The straight leg gives the appearance of a skinny jean but is better at balancing your look if you have wider thighs. Plus, their made by Paige which means they will make you look fabulous from all angles. Available in three dark shades at Paigeusa.com.

Five For Five – Fossil

My mailbox is filling up fast and furious with holiday catalogs and I have a duty to flip through each one. It reminds me of when I was a kid and my brother and I would fight over the huge Sears toy catalog and return it to my mom with dozens of dog-eared pages in hopes she would pass the hint on to Santa. Now, I still dog-ear pages but instead pass them on to my husband in hopes of helping him with his holiday shopping. One such catalog that is is now worse for the wear is the current Fossil catalog. It is full of casual, cozy, rustic-chic pieces that will pair easily with jeans and tees. Great everyday wear that will guide you through the day in laid-back style. Here is the link to the online version of the catalog and each piece is available for purchase online at Fossil.com.

My five favorite pieces:

Better start with the shoes, my achilles heel. Seriously love these rustic boots, can’t you just see them worn with skinny dark jeans and a cozy, chunky marshmallow-colored sweater curled up by a roaring fire sipping hot chocolate.

This charcoal flannel bootie will dress up jeans and tees while running errands as well as look great paired with dark tights and a sweater dress. I love the vintage silhouette, turned up toes and stacked wooden heel.

Ahh The Mackenzie… the perfect cozy, grandpa-inspired chunky cable knit cardy. What else is there to say? A true must-have that you will reach for time and time again. Go ahead buy it in all colors, you will thank yourself later.

The Cameron Jacket is an absolute must-have barn piece, a puffer vest/jacket hybrid that comes off looking feminine and fashionable (two words not usually associated with a puffer vest). Layer over a long turtleneck or striped tee with jeans and boots. It will help keep you warm during changing fall weather.

The piece de resistance! Channel Amelia Earhart with this leather and shearling aviation inspired jacket in crisp, snow white. Rich leather and warm shearling is the perfect combination to combat a chilly day.

Get Your Color On – How To Wear Colored Jeans and Pants

Brightly colored pants, cords and jeans are adding a dash of color to fall. Colored bottoms can make a strong, fashion forward statement and brighten up your wardrobe. They are super easy to wear because they serve as the focal point of your outfit and the key is to keep everything else simple.

This is one trend where less is more. Pair with tops and shoes in solid colors and simple silhouettes (think turtleneck, v-neck long sleeve sweater , structured blazer or crisp white button down and ballet flats, suede booties, round toe pumps or flat knee-high boots). Keep your jewelry super simple, diamond stud earrings and a great masculine looking watch.

As far as color goes, keep your tops to shades of black, gray, white or brown to avoid looking like a crayola and allow the colored bottoms to stand out. I also don’t recommend wearing any prints with bright bottoms, it looks too juvenile for me. Think minimalist.

Bright bottoms can draw attention to problem areas (ie hips and tush) so make sure the pants and jeans fit and flatter. Examine from all angles and if you are a bit hippy pair them with a longer tunic top. If you have bigger thighs steer clear of brightly colored skinny jeans or cords and instead opt for bootcut or wide-leg styles to add balance.

J Crew has a great selection of brightly colored cords:

Channel a modern Audrey Hepburn with these colored ankle cords from AG Jeans worn with ballet flats and a fitted black turtleneck. The electric blue is a good color to try if you are leery of bright colors.

The perfect outfit:

Go colorful in the barn too with Tattini colorful breeches. Your horse may snort as you approach but he will get used to them!

Free Fur All – How To Wear A Fur Vest

We can thank Rachel Zoe for glamorizing the fur vest and making it a must-have this season. The fur vest is an easy way to jazz up your fall and winter wardrobe.

Just keep in mind these few basic tips when shopping for and wearing one:

1. Due to the bulky nature of the vest keep your bottoms slim, think leggings, skinny jeans, fitted dresses and dark tights.

2. Cinch and define your waist by adding a belt over the vest.

3. Look for vests that have a soft, silky feel that doesn’t shed (I prefer faux).

4. Stick to natural looking colors, tan, blonde, gray and black. Avoid white or you will look like the Abominable Snow Monster.

If your style is more traditional throw the fur vest over a solid, dark colored silk button-down shirt, skinny jeans and booties or leggings and knee-high boots. Layer on a long necklace and an armful of bangles (roll the sleeves up on the shirt).

If your style is fashion-forward pair your vest with a solid long sleeve black tee, sequin shorts, black tights and suede booties. Add sparkly chandelier earrings.

Try pairing your vest with a slim sweater dress, add tights and platform heels for an extra sleek look. Perfect for holiday parties or date night.

A leather tie or belt will help cinch your waist and add a bit of definition to your figure.

All fur vests and outfits available online at Piperlime.com.

Covetable Collection

Every season I browse through the latest styles from many of the designers I used to carry in my store, imagining which pieces I would have bought for my customers. Nanette Lepore by far is one of my absolute favorite lines and this season is chock full of amazing must-have pieces that look current and modern with a touch of vintage charm that will have true staying power. Each piece is truly an investment that can be worn again and again. This collection seriously has me missing buying at wholesale! All pieces available online at NanetteLepore.com.

Vine Talk Dress: Bohemian flare and elegant ease, pair now with high-heeled loafers and wear later with patterned tights and boots. It can even pitch hit at a casual holiday party.

Tasting Top: If separates are more your speed, try this top with skinny jeans and jeweled flats or skinny black tuxedo pants and dressy booties.

It’s never to early to start thinking about the holidays and these dresses are the cream of the crop, sure to make you the best dressed.

Nanette Lepore’s tailoring is unprecedented making her jackets and coats fit like a glove. The Napa Valley Coat in teal will add a punch when worn with your basic black and brown and the Riesling Coat’s rich tweed and fur collar will glamorize anything, even when worn to the gym over your workout clothes.

An amazing collection of dressy blouses that can be worn with everything from jeans to pencil skirts to tuxedo pants. Wear to work under a suit or out to a party with sparkly jewelry.

Two of the sexiest basic black skirts, wear with anything and everything and look amazing.

The perfect basic black dress, exceptionally made that will last forever. A true elegant workhorse with a chameleon-like quality. Change it’s entire look with a mix of different accessories, go casual with dark tights, booties and a scarf or wear with sky-high stilettos and a big statement necklace. It’s the perfect base to show off a fabulous range of accessories. Plus it looks like something Kate Middleton would have in her closet.

Love the mix of feminine and tough in this military-inspired sweater. I plan on wearing it with leggings and flat boots as well as to the barn with breeches and riding boots to keep me cozy during early morning, chilly riding lessons.

Get Your Stripes On

A cold, crisp north wind has finally pushed away all memories of the hottest summer on record and put a spring in my step as well as a spring in my horses hooves! It’s time to dig out and dust off your coats and your horse blankets. I’ve had my eye on a Horseware Newmarket Fleece Dress Sheet for my horse and a Horseware Newmarket Fleece Jacket for me. The super-soft anti-pill fleece will be extra cozy for cool fall days as well as make a great base layer on really cold days. The preppy stripes in striking colors add a fashiony touch to traditional solid colors, giving your and your horse’s wardrobe a little zing.

Wear your fleece jacket with jeans or breeches and don’t forget to layer with a fur lined-hooded vest on colder days. Available in three colors at DoverSaddlery.com.

The Horseware Newmarket Fleece Dress Sheet is made from an anti-pill, double-bonded fleece which offers excellent thermal and wicking properties. Cross surcingles and two-surcingle front closures. Sizes 63″-87″ (3″ increments). Available in 4 colors at Shop.Horseware.com. On really cold winter days layer it with your horse’s thick winter blanket for an extra bit of warmth.

Fall Fashion-Equestrian Style

Fashion has a long history of taking design inspiration from the horse world. Just look at Ralph Lauren’s iconic polo pony logo, Gucci’s snaffle bit detail, everything Hermes, knee-high boots modeled after riding boots and the constant return of jodhpur inspired leggings. Equestrian chic holds a certain allure; full of luxury, sport, and rich history. As a horse person I am thrilled when high fashion tips it’s head to the world of horses and riding.

This year SmartPak (the go-to place for all things horse related) tipped it’s head to fashion and composed a fall fashion look book full of gorgeous outfits to wear in and out of the barn. The boots featured are drool worthy and will look great worn with breeches or skinny jeans. Click here to see the full look book.

The Kate Effect

There has been a lot of talk in the fashion world recently about the “Kate Effect” on fashion, is Kate Middleton a style icon and just how much will she influence the fashion world. Some say yes and others say no, it’s just a matter of opinion. Although the more demure styles that took over the runway this spring lead one to suspect designers were listening when women were swooning over Kate’s more conservative way of dress.

As far as I am concerned, I find it refreshing to see a style icon like Kate Middleton. So often, fashion worships strung-out, drug-addicted models (who I think often look like they need a shower, gross and sleazy looking) or over-tanned, over-done fake looking celebrities and reality show stars or overtly trendy bloggers who take fashion risks but just end up looking stupid (ie The Man Repeller). Kate represents class, style and elegance, something often in short supply in Hollywood and in the pages of fashion magazines. Fashion should be about making one look and feel beautiful while also being functional.

Anyway, time to hop off the soap box! As you can see I am huge fan of Kate Middleton’s style and will continue to happily allow her outfit choices to inspire mine! My recent purchases were inspired by two of her outfits.

I loved the Sebago Bala boat shoes she wore in Canada and promptly ordered a pair. The tan and white color Kate wore is currently sold out but will be available in January, so I ordered the gray and black suede pair. They are super comfortable and look preppy worn with skinny cropped jeans. Available online at Sebago.com.

Wear your Sebago boat shoes with another favorite of Kate’s, Paige’s Skyline Ankle Peg jeans. Paige is my favorite jean maker and these are sure to be my go-to jeans until the weather gets chilly. Available at Paigeusa.com.

If you are a fan of Kate Middleton’s style you can keep up with all her outfit choices at WhatKateWore.com and NyMag.com.
