Beauty and The Beast

I am starting a new feature on The Clotheshorse called Beauty and The Beast, where I feature my favorite beauty products as well as my favorite grooming products for horses. Simply put, beauty for both horse and rider!

Beauty

My mom recently bought me and my sister-in-law the Clarisonic Mia Sonic Skin Cleansing System as an early Valentine’s gift. And let me say, it is amazing! After a few weeks of use my skin is soft, smooth and glowing. I use it every night with a squirt of Caudalie’s Gentle Cleanser to remove the day’s makeup and dirt. It is a true must-have to add to your skincare regimen.

Acting as a sonic micro-massaging tool, the cleansing systems gently penetrate the skin at 300 movements per second. The flexing action between the outer and inner brushes works deep within the pores to loosen dirt and oil, while the back and forth oscillating motion of the inner brush effectively cleans, clarifies, and stimulates the skin. Without putting stress on collagen fibers, the sonic technology works gently and effectively to provide a safe form of skincare without over-cleansing. It cleans 6x better than your hands alone and prepares skin for better absorption of creams, serums and moisturizers.

Available for $119 at Clarisonic.com.

Beast

I show horses and having a long, full tail is a necessity. Therefore, I am always on the lookout for products that keep my horses tail in tip top shape.  I first stumbled on Moroccan Oil when my hairdresser kept using it on me every time she cut and colored my hair. It smelled amazing and made my hair soft and shiny without being greasy or heavy. Naturally, my first thought was this stuff would do amazing things to a thick, coarse horse tail.

I bought my first bottle a year ago and now it has a permanent place in my groom tote. Moroccan Oil contains anti-oxidant and vitamin rich Argan Oil (from a tree found in Morocco) that instantly absorbs into the hair and creates softness and shine without leaving a greasy residue. Its strengthens brittle and damaged hair while also increasing elasticity which keeps the hair from breaking when trying to comb out a tangle.

You can apply a dime size amount to a wet tail after washing or just apply it dry with your daily grooming. Your horse’s tail will look amazing. Available in most salons and Beauty Brand stores as well as online at Amazon.com.

How To Wear A Denim Shirt

If you like this post and blog, check out our new website: Bridles and Baubles at www.bridlesandbaubles.com.

Wearing a denim shirt is essentially a no-brainer but wearing it without looking man-ish and maintaining your femininity can be a little difficult. A well-made, soft fabric denim shirt will instantly become a staple for your wardrobe that has the flexibility to be worn year-round.

The first thing to consider when buying a denim shirt is the fit, buy one that has a feminine fitted shape that hugs your curves and defines your waist in order to avoid looking like you stole it from your husband’s closet.

Denim shirts looks amazing when paired with black pants (tucked into wide leg trousers with sky high stilettos or worn with ankle-length capris and ballet flats). Keep your accessories feminine, think brightly colored shoes, dainty belts, an armful of bangles or layered necklaces.

Jewelry instantly glamorizes denim:

Go a step forward in feminizing a denim shirt by wearing it with a pencil skirt in everything from a plain fabric to lace to sequins. It will also look great paired under a sweater, untucked with the tails hanging out, overly a brightly colored skirt. Try wearing a denim shirt under a sleeveless dress for a fun winter look.

Replace your standard white or french blue button-down shirt with a denim shirt when wearing a black, gray or tan suit. It will provide an unexpected pop of color and texture.

Wear a denim shirt as a jacket over a sleeveless, glitzy, going out top or party dress.

A denim shirt is also a perfect barn staple, looking instantly chic worn with the collar popped up, a string a pearls and your breeches and boots.

Color Yourself Pretty

Kick the winter doldrums by adding a pops of color to your winter wardrobe. Bright, cheery colors contrast nicely with the grey, dreary landscape and can’t help but put a smile on your face.

Chase away the chill in a canary yellow pea coat. This sunshine color will brighten up your black and gray winter uniform as well as spread cheer to whoever passes your way. Available on sale at jcrew.com.

Why trudge through the day when you can skip light as air in colorful leather ballet flats? They will pair easily with cords or jeans as well as pop against black or gray tights. Available from jcrew.com.

Or go preppy and colorful with Kate Spade’s green and navy striped flats. Available at katespade.com.

Colored jeans will continue to remain hot well into spring and these skinny Joe’s Jeans come in 55 different colors. Find your fave color to wear now and later when the warmer weather comes calling. And as an added bonus they are a flattering mid-rise style (8 1/2 inch rise) that you can wear tucked into jeans, rolled with flats or stacked with heels. Available at joesjeans.com.

Trade in your dark leather tote for this cheery striped canvas bag from Rebecca Minkoff. It will carry all your essentials as well as remind you of warmer days. Available at rebeccaminkoff.com.

Last but not least, brighten up your cheeks and lips with Josie Maran’s Argan Color Stick. It imparts a rosy glow that brightens up your whole face making you look fresh, young and well-rested. Available from sephora.com.

Brighten up the barn with a cheerfully colored and patterned halter from Red Haute Horse. Your horse might not care but it will at least, make you smile. I particularly like this green and pink style with mini skull and cross bones pattern. Available at redhautehorse.com.

Zip The Zap

We are in the midst of blanket wearing season and if static is making your horse a little uneasy every time you take off and put on his blanket, try this super easy trick to zip the zap. Fill an empty, clean spray bottle 1/3 full with liquid fabric softener and then fill the rest of the bottle with water, shake to mix. Then spritz the mixture liberally on the outside and inside of the blanket when you take it off your horse as well as before using it for the first time after it is washed. Your horse’s blanket will smell delightful and be static free.

If you are worried about allergies you can use a “free, clear” version of fabric softener.

On a personal note (or if you are not a horse person) and are fighting static every time you brush your hair, try spritzing your hair brush with hairspray before brushing. It does the trick!

Get Your Color On – How To Wear Colored Jeans and Pants

Brightly colored pants, cords and jeans are adding a dash of color to fall. Colored bottoms can make a strong, fashion forward statement and brighten up your wardrobe. They are super easy to wear because they serve as the focal point of your outfit and the key is to keep everything else simple.

This is one trend where less is more. Pair with tops and shoes in solid colors and simple silhouettes (think turtleneck, v-neck long sleeve sweater , structured blazer or crisp white button down and ballet flats, suede booties, round toe pumps or flat knee-high boots). Keep your jewelry super simple, diamond stud earrings and a great masculine looking watch.

As far as color goes, keep your tops to shades of black, gray, white or brown to avoid looking like a crayola and allow the colored bottoms to stand out. I also don’t recommend wearing any prints with bright bottoms, it looks too juvenile for me. Think minimalist.

Bright bottoms can draw attention to problem areas (ie hips and tush) so make sure the pants and jeans fit and flatter. Examine from all angles and if you are a bit hippy pair them with a longer tunic top. If you have bigger thighs steer clear of brightly colored skinny jeans or cords and instead opt for bootcut or wide-leg styles to add balance.

J Crew has a great selection of brightly colored cords:

Channel a modern Audrey Hepburn with these colored ankle cords from AG Jeans worn with ballet flats and a fitted black turtleneck. The electric blue is a good color to try if you are leery of bright colors.

The perfect outfit:

Go colorful in the barn too with Tattini colorful breeches. Your horse may snort as you approach but he will get used to them!

Free Fur All – How To Wear A Fur Vest

We can thank Rachel Zoe for glamorizing the fur vest and making it a must-have this season. The fur vest is an easy way to jazz up your fall and winter wardrobe.

Just keep in mind these few basic tips when shopping for and wearing one:

1. Due to the bulky nature of the vest keep your bottoms slim, think leggings, skinny jeans, fitted dresses and dark tights.

2. Cinch and define your waist by adding a belt over the vest.

3. Look for vests that have a soft, silky feel that doesn’t shed (I prefer faux).

4. Stick to natural looking colors, tan, blonde, gray and black. Avoid white or you will look like the Abominable Snow Monster.

If your style is more traditional throw the fur vest over a solid, dark colored silk button-down shirt, skinny jeans and booties or leggings and knee-high boots. Layer on a long necklace and an armful of bangles (roll the sleeves up on the shirt).

If your style is fashion-forward pair your vest with a solid long sleeve black tee, sequin shorts, black tights and suede booties. Add sparkly chandelier earrings.

Try pairing your vest with a slim sweater dress, add tights and platform heels for an extra sleek look. Perfect for holiday parties or date night.

A leather tie or belt will help cinch your waist and add a bit of definition to your figure.

All fur vests and outfits available online at Piperlime.com.

Quenched

My best friend is a major beauty junkie and she recently shared a few of her favorite must-haves with me. Included in my box of beauty goodies was a tube of First Aid Beauty’s Ultimate Repair Cream. It is beyond amazing at quenching dry skin!

Just one little dab and any dry skin vanishes, leaving soft, smooth and glowing skin. It also works great when added to your daily lotion to maintain moisturized skin. My legs get so dry in the summer from the heat and constant use of self-tanners but this cream combats the dryness. Add this to your shopping cart next time you are browsing Sephora.com.

Available in a tub ($28) or an on-the-go tube ($12). Put one on your bathroom counter and one in your purse.

What To Wear: Beach Wedding

My mother-in-law recently enlisted my help finding something to wear to a beach wedding she was luckily invited to. Beach weddings are still formal events and casual beach wear is not acceptable (ie swimsuits, swimsuit coverups, shorts, ribbed cotton tank tops and rubber flip flops). Instead look for loose, airy summer dresses in dressy fabrics and bright colors paired with jeweled flip flops and sandals. Finish the look with an armful of bangles and long layered necklaces and don’t forget the sunscreen.

This long chiffon halter dress was made for a beach wedding. It’s dressy silhouette paired with a pink kaleidoscope print is beach perfect. Add these Kate Spade jeweled flat sandals. Dress available at whitehouseblackmarket.com and shoes available at zappos.com.

This light-as-a-breeze cotton dress in stunning aquamarine will look amazing paired with jeweled flip flops, long necklaces and bangles. Add this 3/4 length gray jacket for a bit more coverage as the evening progresses. Dress available at anthropologie.com and jacket available at whitehouseblackmarket.com. Shoes available at zappos.com.

I love this bohemian print dress cinched with a wide leather belt, gladiator sandals and a white jacket. Dress available at anthropologie.com, jacket available at whitehouseblackmarket.com, belt available at shopbop.com and shoes available at piperlime.com.

Go short and flirty with this fuschia embellished dress available at whitehouseblackmarket.com and feminine jeweled bow sandals available at piperlime.com.

Go Undercover

It seems like every year when spring gives way to summer many women forget to make adjustments to their undergarments to echo the new lightweight, light colored and breezy garments they are donning to beat the heat. I am always shocked when I see my first black thong showing through white pants. I mean how hard is it to look in the mirror before you leave!

In order to avoid these major faux pas keep these tips in mind when getting dressed:

Always, always wear nude colored underwear under white or other light colored pants. Leave the bright colors, whites and prints in the underwear drawer when wearing anything white.

A thong does not always look invisible, especially under lightweight, clingy jersey fabric and tight cotton pants. Thong lines, in my humble opinion, are way worse than panty lines! If you see thong lines switch to a no show, invisible edge pair of panties or boy shorts.

T-shirts and tank tops reign supreme in the summer and they demand a few bra changes. First invest in a great t-shirt bra that will look smooth under all tees and tanks, leave your lace bras in the drawer when wearing a lightweight tee. Only wear nude colored bras under white tops.

I am also totally against allowing your bra straps to show with tank tops and halter tops, this is not a fashion statement, you look like you belong on Jerry Springer. If your bra straps are showing switch to a strapless bra, end of story. I am not a fan of clear bra straps either, we can still see them and you still look trashy. Go strapless!

Also, on the subject of lightweight, clingy jersey fabric that dominates summer dresses, make sure you look at yourself from all angles before walking out of the house. Yes, these dresses are cool and comfy but they can show every lump and bump in a not so flattering light and often need support garments underneath that zero out their cool and comfy quotient. Unless you have zero percent body fat and no cellulite you might consider breezy chiffon or linen when looking for casual dresses or invest in great support garments.

My favorite summer supporting cast:

Soma Vanishing Edge Hipster literally looks invisible under anything and everything you wear. Buy them in nude to wear with all your whites. Truly Amazing!

Soma Travelers Allura Underwire T-Shirt Bra is the best I have found, it provides seamless, full coverage all day shape-enhancing support while being extremely comfortable.

Invest in Spanx’s Bra-Cha-Cha Strapless Bra and Bra-llelujah Racerback Bra to keep bra straps from ruining your sleeveless and strapless tops and dresses.

Spanx Hide and Sleek Full Slip is 5% slip and 95% personal trainer! It keeps you looking slim and toned under lightweight, clingy fabrics.
