Ring Around

Cocktail rings have held on to their must-have status and are an easy way to spice up a simple outfit. This season bigger is better in all aspects of fashion and it holds true for cocktail rings. You can find cocktail rings in a wide range of styles, materials and price ranges allowing you to choose what you really love.

There are a few rules to keep in mind when wearing a cocktail ring. Avoid wearing other rings on the same hand as the cocktail ring and if you wear a wedding ring, wear your cocktail ring on the opposite hand. Keep the rest of your jewelry relatively simple to allow the cocktail ring to take center stage.

Free People has an amazing selection of cocktail rings (photographed with models wearing them so you get an accurate idea of their size) available on their website

Five For Five: J Crew

J Crew is my go-to store when I need great basics and occasionally they have beautiful fashion pieces too. This season, I am sad to say, is not their best, but there are still some great pieces to be had that will serve you well this season. All pieces available online at

J Crew has a great selection of tees in a variety of styles and colors at great prices that you can add to your closet. This 3/4 sleeve henley is light and airy with a long silhouette. It gets dressed up by layered silk along the neckline and the pocket.

Utility chic jackets are a must have for spring and I love this silk taffeta riveter coat in sunshine yellow. Wear it on a rainy day to put a little spring in your step. If the yellow is too bright for you, it also comes in a pale pink. The color and fabric make it a little more elegant than other safari/utility jackets.

I love mixing casual pieces with elegant items to create an unusual, yet stylish pairing. This metallic jacquard silk skirt is perfect to pair with a tee and sandals but will also work perfect in a pinch for a dressier event when paired with a silk ruffled blouse and heels. The color is warm and buttery and looks like you are wearing liquid gold.

J Crew’s jewelry collection continues to impress each season and this layered, jumbled ribbon necklace looks like it was pulled from a Paris flea market. This stunning necklace can be worn with anything and everything to add a dash of bold exuberance.

I would be lost without J Crew’s flip flops. They are easy to wear and oh so simple and chic. This leather pair accented with a suede flower will look equally at home with shorts, jeans, wide leg trousers, skirts and dresses.

Valentine’s Day Presents to Give and Get

February is here and with it comes a whole month devoted to love, chocolate and romance. As I am typing this, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner and it’s time to start shopping for the loved ones in your life. I have compiled a list of great gifts to give and get to help your shopping along.

Might as well start off here, you can never go wrong giving and getting Agent Provocateur, a little high fashion and a whole lot sexy,

If lingerie is not your speed or your relationship is not quite to that point then here are a few great gifts for the men or man in your life.

You can never go wrong with a Fossil watch, they have so many amazing styles that are rugged yet elegant as well as reasonable priced, available at

If your hubby or boyfriend is a coffee drinker, treat him to the coffee indulgence that is Peet’s, available at

If the love of your life is a bit of a clotheshorse, this nylon knit jacket from Banana Republic would be well received. It is the perfect lightweight jacket to transition from winter to spring with its nylon front and back shell mixed with soft comfy knit sleeves, available at

Cologne always makes for an easy gift that you can enjoy as well, try buying him something new by using Sephora’s fragrance finder or you can buy him one of their sampler sets that include samples of cologne that he can try and then choose the one he likes and redeem his voucher for a full size bottle of his favorite fragrance, available at

Chocolate is the quintessential gift to give for Valentine’s Day, perfect for the love of your life as well as loved ones in your life like friends and family members. Indulge them with a newly discovered chocolatier, Black Dinah Chocolatiers. This Maine chocolatier crafts every piece from hand and was recently featured in February’s issue of Martha Stewart Living, available at

Just a quick note to all the ladies reading this, please take a few moments to think about what you might like from your hubby or boyfriend for Valentine’s Day and give him a list of things to choose from. Men are not the best shoppers in the world and you can avoid heartache and or a fight by giving him some good ideas. Here are some fun and easy ideas you might want to suggest.

Jewelry is always a great, but in order to avoid him going to your nearest cheapy mall jewelry store (that are advertising on TV like crazy) and picking you up something ugly that you will never wear, suggest some jewelry companies that you love and better fit your style.

Viv & Ingrid has some amazingly beautiful jewelry that is very fashionable and wearable, not to mention a great website to shop from, available at

Shopbop also has great selection of jewelry,

Flowers are also a Valentine’s Day essential and the traditional red rose bouquet, while pretty, can also be a little boring so this year ask your florist to jazz up the bouquet a bit by adding complimentary flowers to the arrangement or order a Martha Stewart bouquet from 1 800 Flowers, they are a little more elegant and contemporary, available at

Cheap Trick – 5 Must Haves

You can still look fab in these trying economic times by keeping an eye out for stylish, yet expensive items that look more expensive than they are. One of my favorite shops on the web for this is It is chocked full of trendy, inexpensive items that will breathe new life into last year’s fall wardrobe. Here are my 5 favorite must haves.

1980’s Boyfriend Blazers are huge this season and very versatile, wear with jeans or over a cocktail dress, and with the price ($52) of this one you can afford to indulge in other trends.

Dare I say it? Yes I think I will, the holidays are just around the corner as well as the crush of party invites. This black drapey lace trimmed dress is elegant yet modern and will look great dressed up with sparkly bangles and sky high stilettos or dressed down with leggings and booties. It will also look great with the above blazer thrown over it. Plus it’s mouth dropping price of $38 will leave enough for you to buy presents. Did I mention that the drapey fabric will also hide any signs of holiday overeating.

Long over lean is a big silhouette this season and this $37 dress/tunic looks way more expensive than it is thanks in part to its unique details and high style quotient. Wear it paired with dark tights and boots and it’s casual elegance and tunic length will complement leggings and skinny jeans too.

Turn heads in this $42 satin ruffled party top. They won’t have any idea how much money you saved when they see you wearing it paired with black skinny pants and bejeweled heels.

Jewelry can always add newness to anything in your closet. This $28 necklace looks like it was found in an out of the way antique store or dug out from a treasure trove of vintage clothing and accessories.

Let’s Hear It For The Boys

It’s all about the boys, boyfriend jeans, boyfriend sweaters, boyfriend blazers and now you can add the boyfriend watch to your list of must haves items you can steal from the man in your life (as if his razor wasn’t enough).

However, if wearing your actual boyfriend’s watch won’t quite work due to the fact that it would be way too loose and spend all day skating up and down your much smaller arm, you can buy a women’s boyfriend watch that matches his in style and scale but can be altered to better fit you.

Fossil has a great selection of oversized boyfriend watches at reasonably affordable prices. Try on a few to get the right feel and remember it is meant to be worn loose so it mimics what it would look like if you swiped your boyfriend’s watch from his bedside table. Being on time has never looked so good. Watches available at

Squared Away

Cocktail rings are an easy and inexpensive way to up the style quotient of any outfit. They add instant glamour to any outfit from super trendy to everyday basic and can be purchased at any price point. I am currently loving this art deco “geo” ring from Juicy Couture. The black resin is a striking backdrop to the crystals and it looks very “Great Gatsby”. The square shape is unique and eye catching and will make a bold, chic statement. Available at

Full Volume-How To Wear A Maxi Dress

I will admit it, I was not a big fan of maxi dresses when they first came out. They just seemed big and unflattering and the name maxi even put me off, like something you see on the side of a feminine hygiene product. But as the thermometer rises and it gets harder to look cool and stylish I have become a convert to the maxi dress.

Yes they are full of volume but if purchased with the correct shape and fit they can be very flattering as well as extremely cool and comfy. They are also very versatile because they can be dressed up and down with accessories you already own. They are perfect for trips and vacations because they are easy to pack and they can pull double duty as an outfit or a swimsuit cover up. Wear it one day with flip flops for sightseeing and another night out with wedges and layered necklaces, they also look great layered with a denim jacket or cardigan.

A few tips to keep in mind while shopping for a maxi dress:

Do Buy a maxi dress in the correct length for your height or get it hemmed, too long dresses look sloppy and cause you to trip.

Avoid gathered waists if you are bulky around the middle and make sure the top fits “the girls” properly, no one wants to see them spilling out nor do you want to spend all day pulling the top up. Make sure the dress skims instead of clings.

Avoid bright, crazy and loud prints, they can make you look heavier, opt for fun graphic or soft floral prints and you can never go wrong with solid colors.

Do accessorize with long layered necklaces, stacks of bangles, hoop earrings, belts or a summer scarf.

Do shop around, great maxi dresses can be found at a wide variety of stores in a range of prices, colors and styles.

Last but not least, please do not wear your maxi dress with cowboy boots, opt for flip flops, gladiator sandals or wedges and use caution when wearing with pumps they just seem too sophisticated for the bohemian look of the maxi dress.

For a great selection of maxi dresses check out

Pair this Juicy Couture maxi dress with yellow bejeweled Mystique flip flips ( and colorful Juicy Couture Bangles (

You can never go wrong with this black strapless maxi dress by Velvet, sleek, slimming and elegant, pair with these purple Seychelles gladiators ( and a scattered glass statement making necklace (

Two super cute maxi dresses from Alice + Olivia and Velvet.

Faking It

Let’s just admit it-there are certain days when you just don’t feel like putting a lot of thought into your outfit for whatever reason, you are having a fat day or you just want to be comfy or whatever, but there are 4 must have accessories that can add a bit of style and class to any outfit whether is is from Neiman’s or Target. I think it is important to invest in a few high end accessories that are timeless and will never go out of style but up the fashion quotient of any outfit.

My never fail, dress up any outfit must haves are a Burberry Scarf, Designer Sunglasses (Prada and Chanel are my faves), a Louis Vuitton Speedy handbag and a nice piece of jewelry (pearl necklace, diamond stud earrings or a nice watch). Throw any one (or all of the above) on with a black tee from Target, jeans and sneakers and you will instantly look chic, even though your outfit is lacking any real style. The above items scream good taste and high end status and thus rub off on whatever else you are wearing.

Burberry Scarf: The trademark Burberry plaid has been a symbol of British luxury since it first appeared on the lining of a trench coat in 1924 and when used in the form of a scarf it adds a dash of style to any look. Available at

Designer Sunglasses are a relatively inexpensive way to jazz up your look and there are so many great styles to choose from. Check out for a great selection.

Louis Vuitton Speedy is the perfect purse, roomy, versatile and the signature monogram canvas is an instantly recognized symbol of chic. Available at

A pearl necklace, diamond stud earrings (real or faux) and a nice watch are simple and elegant and lend these qualities to the rest of your outfit.

So Charming

I learned a long time ago, but have only recently accepted the fact, that I look better in simple, basic silhouettes. For years I would take fussy, intricate or complicated items into the dressing room loving how they looked on the mannequin or my friends only to be disappointed that they just don’t work on me. I have tried to love puff sleeves, ruffles, bright prints and interesting collars but they do not love me back. Elegant, clean silhouettes preferably in black favor me.

So when minimalism is not de rigeur I look to jewelry to add a pop of style to my closet of simplicity.  A great pair of earrings or stunning necklace can do wonders for simple silhouettes while ensuring your outfit stands out from the pack. Needless to say I was thrilled when I discovered an amazing new online jewelry store, charmingly named Charm and Chain. They carry a gorgeous array of right on trend necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings. Check it out at
