Cheap Trick: Toughen Up

It has been an insanely hot summer and I am dreaming of cooler days and the slew of boots, sweaters and jeans that go with it. Stores and websites are slowly pushing their summer stuff out the doors with deep discounts and trickling in rich colors, cozy sweaters, new denim and a slew of boots. Now is the time to be on the lookout for items that can be worn now and later, adding newness to your weary summer wardrobe while also helping you transition into fall mode.

Needless to say, I was thrilled when these booties showed up in my e-mail inbox courtesy of a Nine West e-mail. They are super chic and sophisticated with a tougher, rocker edge. Perfect to buy now and wear in place of wedges with rolled boyfriend jeans as well as structured shift dresses (the black will add an edge to colored dresses and the brown will look amazing with creamy neutrals). Then as the weather turns cooler pair them with skinny jeans or tights and skirts.

Did I mention they look way more expensive than their $139 price tag? Available in three colors at

What To Wear: Beach Wedding

My mother-in-law recently enlisted my help finding something to wear to a beach wedding she was luckily invited to. Beach weddings are still formal events and casual beach wear is not acceptable (ie swimsuits, swimsuit coverups, shorts, ribbed cotton tank tops and rubber flip flops). Instead look for loose, airy summer dresses in dressy fabrics and bright colors paired with jeweled flip flops and sandals. Finish the look with an armful of bangles and long layered necklaces and don’t forget the sunscreen.

This long chiffon halter dress was made for a beach wedding. It’s dressy silhouette paired with a pink kaleidoscope print is beach perfect. Add these Kate Spade jeweled flat sandals. Dress available at and shoes available at

This light-as-a-breeze cotton dress in stunning aquamarine will look amazing paired with jeweled flip flops, long necklaces and bangles. Add this 3/4 length gray jacket for a bit more coverage as the evening progresses. Dress available at and jacket available at Shoes available at

I love this bohemian print dress cinched with a wide leather belt, gladiator sandals and a white jacket. Dress available at, jacket available at, belt available at and shoes available at

Go short and flirty with this fuschia embellished dress available at and feminine jeweled bow sandals available at

Up until now, the phrase “comfortable high heels” has always been an oxymoron to me. Granted some pairs are less painful than others but I have never actually thought, man these heels are comfy. But that all changed yesterday when my best friend came in from out of town and we engaged in our favorite past time of shopping.

We both discovered and purchased Diane von Furstenberg’s Zia Suede Heels. They are just yummy, made from rich, buttery suede with a crisscross strap and a cushioned platform. I can honestly say they are very comfortable and easy to walk in plus extremely stylish. Add these to your must have list for spring, your feet will thank you! Available online at

I bought the soft, nude Fawn color.

My friend bought the warmer Camel color.

Hello Sunshine

Spring is in the air and Kate Spade’s new website is full of sunshiny staples to brighten your spring. Kate Spade’s newest collection is full of charm and whimsy, harkening back to the early days of Kate Spade when it was full of elegant, classic and covetable purses, shoes and accessories. I am loving the bright pops of yellow mixed with linen on shoes and handbags and feminine outfits. Happy Spring!

The perfect spring tote, also available in pink and orange.

A sweet evening bag that will brighten up your favorite LBD.

I need these shoes! They will look incredibly chic with skinny, cropped white jeans and loose summery skirts. Also available in pink.

What is more cheerful than a silk, cotton skirt in sunshine yellow?

An incredibly sweet cardigan in bright yellow pops against white and chocolate.

Label Love: Vince Camuto

I went shoe shopping last night and bought my fourth pair of Vince Camuto heels. It is now safe to say, I am a “super fan” of Vince Camuto!

They are trendy, unique, relatively comfortable and reasonably priced. They look much more expensive and high-end. I am always shocked when I flip the display over and see an amazing price.

None of this should come as a surprise since Vince Camuto was a co-founder of Nine West and it’s creative director for many years. He was instrumental is growing Nine West to the company it is today. He also colloborated with Tory Burch to launch her amazing footwear collection which includes the iconic “Reva” ballet flats.

Spring In Your Step

I always ease my way into a new season by starting with the shoes. It just seems more practical than buying tank tops while it is still cold or sweaters when it is still hot. You can usually start wearing them right away, getting instant gratification.

Here are a few pairs that are on my spring wish list:

Talbots Peep Toe Platforms: Sweet and Ladylike

Sam Edelman Lorissa: A little bit rock n roll and a whole lot of chic.

Nine West Stylin: 70’s inspired platforms that will look great with everything from flared jeans to casual dresses.

Naughty Monkey Beam Me Up: Playful gladiators that pair perfectly with neutrals and denim.

Best of The Nudes: These Frye and Kate Spade neutral heels stand out from the flesh colored crowd with their interesting details and leg lengthening abilities.

Superga 2750 Classic: Italian sneakers for running around on the weekends, pair with rolled boyfriend jeans or denim skirts.

J Crew Bowdelaire Ballet Flats: Put a little sparkle in your step.

Jimmy Choo Nova Glitter Finish Slingbacks: I am sucker for glittery shoes and these bronze platforms will be my go to cocktail shoes.

Shop The Transition

I have never been a huge fan of resort/transition collections that bridge the gap between winter and spring. They tend to look the same every year, heavy on nautical themes (white, navy and stripes) often looking out of place on a cold winter day. But there are usually a few key pieces out there that you can add to wardrobe to prepare for spring but also add freshness to your winter staples.

Stick to neutrals: Neutral shades of cream and tan are major players for spring but are making their debut now, add a few to your closet to get a jump on the trend.

White House Black Market Mini-Dot Trench Coat: Love, Love, Love this trench coat, super elegant in an on-trend shade of neutral, creamy tan with black mini-dots. Wear over your dark winter shades to add lightness now and then layer over all your spring basics on cooler days for a very Parisian look. Plus, who doesn’t look sexy and mysterious in a trench coat.

J Crew Laramie Tote: Start carrying this pretty yet tough tote in a warm peachy tan now and into warmer days.

Miu Miu Crystal Heel Satin Sandals: Nude shoes continue to be popular thanks in part to their leg lengthening abilities and this pair stands out from the crowd. An investment piece that will never go out of style.

Denim As A Safe Bet: You can never go wrong with denim and these pieces will become daily favorites.

Madewell Trooper Jacket: A lightweight cotton, throw it over anything jacket that will look great worn to work over a thin cashmere sweater and dress pants or on the weekends worn with a t-shirt and yoga pants. Plus it will be a great cover for floaty spring dresses.

Madewell Shrunken Chambray Boy Shirt: If you didn’t invest in a denim shirt this fall, definitely buy one now. This laid-back style has staying power and can be paired with everything from slouchy pants to long cocktail skirts. A must-have piece you will fall in love with.

Textile by Elizabeth and James Mid-Rise Flared Jeans: This 70’s inspired silhouette is huge for spring, a counterpoint to skinny jeans and will add newness to your skinny dominated denim.

Pretty Extras

Anthropologie Blurred Petals Pullover: Prints abound for spring but this fuzzy pullover can be worn now with jeans or later with shorts as pictured below. Go ahead, wear bright colors now.

Born Ballet Flats: It looks like cropped flare pants and jeans will be a fresh style for spring and usually look best when paired with dainty ballet flats. Start searching for a few pairs like these floral embellished flats in a neutral gold shade.

Boot Up

You have searched high and low to find the perfect boots to wear this winter and all you need are a few simple tips and tricks to keep them in tip top shape through cold, rain and snow.

First pretreat leather and suede styles: Spray them with a silicone-free water repellent, such as Vectra-16 Spray ($13, Reapply at least twice a season. Have a cobbler attach rubber sole protectors (about $20) to the bottoms so that water won’t seep in.

When boots get wet: Stuff them with newspaper to preserve the shape and speed the air-drying process. Next, condition leather with colorless Kiwi Leather Lotion ($7, Or remove water marks on suede or nubuck with a suede eraser, and restore the nap with a brush. (Kiwi Suede & Nubuck Kit, $9,

If boots get stained with salt: Combine 1 part white vinegar and 1 part water. Using a paper towel, dab the solution onto the spots until they disappear. (Suede boots should be cleaned by a professional.)
