The Bee’s Knees

Harsh, dark lipstick seems to look out of place in the summer time, clashing with light and airy clothing and melting into a hot mess in the summer sun. Stash your favorite lipsticks until fall and swipe on a tinted lip balm. Your lips will appreciate the extra moisture and you will love the rosy sheen of color they lend to your pucker.

My newest addiction in the form of a tinted lip balm comes from the Guru Of All Things Organic, Burt’s Bees. Their tinted lip balm is full of organic and good for you ingredients, as well as a hint of color. They leave your lips soft, full and juicy colored. There is no gloss or glitter and they glide on without leaving your lips sticky. Available in 6 shades from neutral to pink to red. I currently own Rose and Red Dahlia and plan to add the rest to my makeup drawer, purse and car. Available online at burtsbees.com.

PS Not a paid advertisement, I just wanted to share my favorite lip balm.

Best Of Beauty 2010: Part 1

They say the first step to recovery is to admit you have a problem. Well, dear faithful readers, I am an addict and Sephora is my dealer. I am a certified beauty junkie, Sephora calls my name, tantalizing my senses with a rainbow of colors and smells. I am obsessed with trying new beauty products and my bathroom drawers and shelves are filled to the limits. This is one habit I refuse to kick and therefore decided to share my favorite beauty products with you.

From an admitted beauty junkie, here is my list of my absolute favorite beauty items, some old tried and true favorites and new rock stars.

Face and Body Products:

Face Cleanser:  Caudalie Gentle Cleanser, amazing creamy cleanser that leaves skin soft, clean and smooth.

Face Exfoliator: Boscia Smoothing Facial Polish, a gentle scrub that leaves skin glowing while also being natural and preservative free.

Zit Zapper: I use Boscia’s Clear Complexion Cleanser and Clear Complexion Treatment together to zap the occasional breakout, both are mild yet effective and all natural.

Face Moisturizer: Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, I have been using this product since I was 10 years old, the perfect moisturizer.

Anti-Aging: Caudalie Vinosource Riche and Patricia Wexler MMPi Skin Regenerating Serum, both help diminish fine lines while firming and plumping my skin.

Sunscreen: tie between La Roche-Posay Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizing Cream with Sunscreen (I wear it everyday, a lightweight, non greasy sunscreen) and Coppertone Water Babies SPF 70 (I wear it when I am outside in the summer, super potent and protective).

Body Lotion: Jason Hand and Body Therapy Vanilla Lotion, a thick moisturizing lotion that is pure, organic and natural, plus it leaves a light scent of vanilla, like a cupcake.

Body Scrub: tie between Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish (gives you the softest skin ever) and Philosophy’s The Gingerbread Man (smells amazing).

Self-Tanning: Lancome Flash Bronzer, gives you that just spent a week at the beach look, creates an all over, even, natural looking tan.

Hand Cream: Aveeno Intense Relief Hand Cream, I wear this every night before bed and I wake with soft, smooth hands, which is a miracle considering they take a beating each day in the barn.

Stay tuned for Part 2: Makeup. What are your can’t live without beauty products?

Purple People-Eater

Not sure exactly what is a “Purple People-Eater”, other than something I remember hearing about in a song during my childhood and has just stuck with me. This phrase popped back into my head yesterday when I was undressing and noticed that my black shirt had turned my arms, back and shoulders and nice shade of bluish-purple. The black dye must not have been properly set and rubbed off on me.

After a quick scrub in the tub to wash away the “Purple People-Eater” look I was now sporting, I hopped on the net and googled “how to set dye”. I remembered something about setting dye with vinegar in one of my textile classes in college but couldn’t remember all the details. I also dearly loved this black top (super soft, scoop-neck tunic that looks amazing with skinny black pants and jeans) and wanted it to survive dye setting intact and ready to wear again, minus the purple rub off.

Sure enough, I was right about using vinegar to set dye in clothing. Just soak your garment for a few minutes in a sink of cold water and one cup of white distilled vinegar. Then throw the garment in the washing machine set on cold and delicate/hand wash. Voila, no more “Purple People-Eater”!

PS: The vinegar soak also works wonders on dark blue denim jeans to set the color keeping them extra dark and from rubbing off their color on everything you wear with them.

You can also purchase the song “Purple People-Eater” on itunes!

It looks like celebrity stylist extraordinaire Rachel Zoe is working on designing a clothing line for us non-celebrities. According to www.people.com she is working on a clothing line that is 100% accessible to everyday gals and plans for the line to include jewelry, handbags, clothing and fragrances. Rachel Zoe is famous for dressing celebrities like Nicole Richie, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Garner and Cameron Diaz as well as her crazy antics on her show The Rachel Zoe Project. Straight From The Horse’s Mouth

Just a few tidbits of juicy fashion news straight from the horse’s mouth:

Simon Fuller (mastermind behind American Idol and Spice Girls) has joined forces with Sojin Lee (formerly at Net a Porter) to launch a fashion style website called Fashionair. Fashionair will not sell merchandise but will focus on editorial content with lots of fashion and style tips, trends and tricks. They plan on partnering with brands and retailers to have pop up shops so readers can then purchase feature items. The site is not up yet but you can sign up to receive details by going to www.fashionair.com.

Speaking of Net a Porter, they plan to launch sometime next month a designer discount site called TheOutNet.com which will feature over 200 designer brands on sale for up to 40%-60% off. Look for great deals on designers like Christian Louboutin, Diane von Furstenberg, Chole and Oscar de la Renta, just to name drop a few. You can sign up for e-mails at www.theoutnet.com.

How To Have Style

Last night while curled up in bed reading Allure magazine, I read one of the the most simple yet profound statements about how to have great style. Allure was interviewing Isaac Mizrahi in regards to his new book, How To Have Style, and he said one of the keys to looking fab is too “dress like you have a crush on someone”.

These words are so simple and oh so true, when we have a crush on someone we are giddy and exuberant and tend to spend extra time on the way we look, making sure every item of clothing we put on plays up our best assets, every color we chose flatters our skin tone and makes our eyes glow. Isn’t that what we should do every time we get dressed, choose only those items that make us look and feel good? Too often this isn’t always the case, women get so busy doing a million different things and forget to spend time on their appearances.

Remember these words, “dress like you have a crush on someone” the next time you are in your closet looking for something to wear or the next time you are in a dressing room shopping and only chose those items that make you look stellar. Trust me, it will definitely change the way you dress!

Obama Iowa Victory Speech

I know this blog is mainly dedicated to fashion and shopping but I also love politics and after the speech Barack Obama gave last night after his win in Iowa, I just felt like I needed to post it here so more people could see it. It was one of the best political speeches I have ever seen. Please take the time to watch this amazing speech. Enjoy!

Fashion News Flash

Just to keep you on the cutting edge of fashion, I have a few fashion business news stories that may affect your shopping!

Liz Claiborne is cleaning out it’s closet! They just announced they are trying to sell, license or possibly discontinue altogether 16 of their 36 apparel brands. The 16 brands are Sigrid Olsen, Prana, Ellen Tracy, Dana Buchman, Mac & Jac, Kensie, Intuitions, C&C California, Enyce, Laundry, Tint, Stamp 10, First Issue, Emma James, Tapemeasure and JH Collectibles. I was a little shocked to see C&C and Laundry on the list since those are two pretty popular contemporary brands, although it could be a good thing if they are purchased by another company. Laundry has not looked great in about 2 years and it used to be one of the best fashion brands, so maybe if it is purchased by another company they can restore it to its former fashion status. If you are a fan of the super soft C&C tees and tanks you might want to stock up now because who knows what might happen to their look or quality if sold! Just goes to show nothing stays in the same in fashion!

In other fashion news Limited Brands has sold 75% ownership of its Limited stores to Sun Capital Partners Inc and 75% ownership of its Express stores to Golden Gate Capital. Limited Brands has been shifting its emphasis away from apparel (obviously, has anyone else noticed how muddled, non-cohesive and not to mention bad the merchandise has been in both Limited and Express the past few seasons!) so it can focus on its beauty (Bath and Body Works) and lingerie (Victoria’s Secret) brands. Both Limited and Express are expected to keep their names and Mr. Weiss (a retired CEO of Express) has been re-hired to run the Express brand. I suppose this could be a good thing all the way around for shoppers. You have two companies who are going to work really hard to get Limited and Express full of great merchandise we will want to buy and you also have a company who can now devote all their attention to making Bath and Body Works and Victoria’s Secret even better than they already are!

You can click on any of the highlighted words to be linked to their respected websites.
