Not sure exactly what is a “Purple People-Eater”, other than something I remember hearing about in a song during my childhood and has just stuck with me. This phrase popped back into my head yesterday when I was undressing and noticed that my black shirt had turned my arms, back and shoulders and nice shade of bluish-purple. The black dye must not have been properly set and rubbed off on me.
After a quick scrub in the tub to wash away the “Purple People-Eater” look I was now sporting, I hopped on the net and googled “how to set dye”. I remembered something about setting dye with vinegar in one of my textile classes in college but couldn’t remember all the details. I also dearly loved this black top (super soft, scoop-neck tunic that looks amazing with skinny black pants and jeans) and wanted it to survive dye setting intact and ready to wear again, minus the purple rub off.
Sure enough, I was right about using vinegar to set dye in clothing. Just soak your garment for a few minutes in a sink of cold water and one cup of white distilled vinegar. Then throw the garment in the washing machine set on cold and delicate/hand wash. Voila, no more “Purple People-Eater”!
PS: The vinegar soak also works wonders on dark blue denim jeans to set the color keeping them extra dark and from rubbing off their color on everything you wear with them.
You can also purchase the song “Purple People-Eater” on itunes!

There are certain things that you know as soon as you try them on, they will instantly become one of your absolute favorite items of clothing to wear. When this fashion kismet happens I am usually inclined to buy that item in bulk, one in every color and even multiples of the same color, knowing I will want to wear them again and again. I recently stumbled onto two great buy in bulk items that I know will serve you, my fair reader, well in all your fashion adventures.
The first buy in bulk item comes from Anthropologie and can quite simply be described as divine. As soon as I pulled this fluid jersey 3/4 sleeve top over my head and felt the fabric softly brush across my skin, I knew it would be coming home with me. It’s fabric is like butter, so soft and comfy and it’s loose fit is at once flattering and comfortable. The pleating at the neck and sleeves add visual interest but is simple enough to wear with anything and everything, from skinny jeans to pencil skirts to comfy yoga pants. Simply put, a flattering, wear with anything, awesome shirt. Available in three colors online at www.anthropologie.com. PS Buy down a size from what you normally wear to keep it from being too loose.
The second buy in bulk item is more of an everyday layering piece, that is a true necessity to have in your bag of fashion tricks. The White House Black Market Ultra Soft Seamless cami is the perfect layering piece to wear under jackets, sweaters, button down tops or low cut shirts. It’s stretchy seamless fabric shapes and smoothes without being too tight and the wide straps fit and stay put. Since White House Black Market knows you want one in each color, they are buy one get one 50% off. Available in black and white at www.whitehouseblackmarket.com.
Madewell is now available for shopping online via www.madewell.com! Madewell is owned by J Crew and focuses on great everyday basics like amazing fitting jeans, super soft tees and vintage inspired jewelry. When Madewell first came out they only sold via their stores and I had the privilege of shopping in one in Las Vegas. Their website just had a tantalizing display of merchandise that could only be purchased in stores or via the phone but you can now order your favorites online! Shop til you drop at www.madewell.com.
It may still be January with it’s chilly, gray days and stores filled to the brim with picked over sale merchandise, but two warmer than normal, sunny days have me looking ahead to spring.
Navy is always a good way to transition to spring and you often see it pop up in many early-spring collections. It less harsh than black but doesn’t scream spring like bright or pastel colors and it works well into your current wardrobe. It’s no wonder that these two items from designer Markus Lupfer caught my attention, they have a springy look but can easily be worn now layered and with denim. Both items available at www.net-a-porter.com.
I love this cute, quirky Hello Sailor extra long t-shirt, it will look great worn with skinny jeans and booties layered under a scarf and light colored cardigan; come spring it will be just as versatile worn with baggy boyfriend jeans and flats or paired with worn chinos and Jack Purcell shoes.
There has been a fair amount of buzzing that stripes will be hot for spring and this double layered cardigan will be perfect to wear now and when spring finally pushes winter away. It provides you an easy way to wear layers and stripes while looking bright and fresh. Pair it now with a crisp white button down and dark denim and wear it later with skinny cropped jeans, a white tank and flats. It will even look cute worn over a gauzy summer dress. The stripes are far apart and separated a bit by the blue under layer so they won’t make you look wider.
Take 1 part super soft slouchy cotton tee add 1 part hand drawn jewelry graphics and top it off with hand sewn antique looking jewels for a casual meets dressed up tee. This adorable J Crew tee is an easy addition to your wardrobe that will look great with skinny jeans, slim cardigan and jeweled flats or worn under a sleek black blazer and pencil skirt or dress up casual comfy pants and sneakers for relaxing weekends. A tee this versatile is hard to come by and well worth buying. Available at www.jcrew.com.
This time of year always makes me miss my college alma mater’s home town. As I see college kids readying themselves for another semester, it makes me feel nostalgic remembering my college days. I inevitably make a trip back to take in the sights and sounds, enjoy a football or basketball game, don the team colors and shop and eat at all the local hot spots, reliving my joy of college. So in honor of all those still in college, those that wish they still were and the upcoming kick off to college football season I present you with the Victoria’s Secret Collegiate Pink Collection.
It is a great collection of casual, trendy tees, tanks, pants and hoodies emblazoned with your school logo. The fit is smaller and more feminine then you usually find at the college bookstore. Go ahead and show a little school spirit whether you are in school, graduated or just a fan. Available online at www.victoriassecret.com.
While on vacation a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of shopping in a Madewell store. Madewell is J Crew’s latest spin off that opened a little over a year ago. Their intent was to create a smaller, well edited line of must have basics which centered around great denim. All of their looks and styles are trendy but still very accessible and wearable. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I walked in because unfortunately you can not shop from their website, all sales are made through phone orders or at the stores.
Since the line is focused on denim I decided I better try a few pairs on and see if they lived up to the hype. I had the salesperson help me pick out a few styles to try and while she was putting them in a dressing room I was drawn to the racks of super soft colorful tees and immediately started grabbing one of each style and color to try.
I loved every pair of jeans I tried on, the fit and fabric was amazing! You could tell the designers spent a tremendous amount of time getting it right. I would recommend trying a pair of the Rail Straight jeans, the skinny leg is elongating and they sit at the perfect spot on your waist and hips without gaping.
The t-shirts were also wonderful, long in length with flattering necklines and the sleeves were the perfect length, they hit mid upper arm, which is so much more slimming that those silly tees that barely cover your shoulders and make all arms look chunky. They were definitely buy in bulk, wear all the time kind of tees.
Madewell is well worth making a trip to and if you do not have one in your city, visit one that does and make friends with the salesperson so you can call her and have her send you new stuff! Madewell reminds me of what Gap used to be, the perfect spot to fill in the holes in your closet! Check out their website at www.madewell1937.com.

A great mix of unique tops allows you to get more mileage out of your basic bottoms, you can change the way an outfit looks just by changing the top, take a black pencil skirt and pair it with a fitted button down top for work then change into a silk halter top and you are date ready. One can never have too many tops especially at 20% off! Check it out at www.shopbop.com.
A few of my favorite tops from Shopbop:
These two necklace tops come with their own accessories already attached, pure perfection.
The perfect work top, professional but stylish.
This tie neck halter top is fun and flirty for a night out but looks equally as cute for work worn under a suit jacket or cardigan.
There is nothing easier than throwing on jeans and a cute tee and thanks to the popularity of graphic tees you could even look fashionable. Graphic tees have been around the block and are a bit overdone, (with the exception of a super cute tee that said “here comes trouble” that Ginnifer Goodwin wore in He’s Just Not That Into You, which is a great movie, but that being said she was wearing it as a pajama top, something I recommend doing with your graphic tees but I digress). Thanks to Paul Smith you can get the ease of throwing on a pair of jeans and tee while still looking trendy without wearing the aforementioned over done graphic tee.
Paul Smith’s illusion tees give the look of wearing a cardigan or lacey tank in one easy crew neck piece because the cardigan and tank are printed on the tee. There is even one that looks like a pair of sunglasses are hooked on to the collar of the shirt. Pure genius and absolutely adorable! Available at www.zappos.com.
