An Extra Inch – Stylish Boots For Wider Calves

“Dear Clotheshorse, I am loving all the fall knee-high boots this season but have a hard time finding a pair that will fit my calves. Are there any stylish boots out there for gals like me with wider calves?”

The above question was recently posed to me and I can sympathize since years of riding have left me with muscular calves that don’t always fit in tight, zip up, knee-high boots. After doing some extensive research I was able to find a treasure trove of stylish boots that come in wider calf widths, whether you need a little extra room or a lot there are great options out there.

Your first stop should be, where every boot on their site comes in wide calf sizes. Ask and you shall receive via the internet, it truly has it all. has a great selection of flat, high-heel, knee-high, over the knee, dressy and casual boots. A one stop shop! Many of the boots come in a variety of calf widths so take a soft tape measure and measure the widest part of your calf on both legs in order to determine which size will work best for you.

How adorable are these gray suede boots with sweater knit detail? I am so buying these.

You can’t do a footwear post without mentioning Zappos and they also have a nice selection of boots with wider calves. Click this link to see their selection or go to and search for wide calf boots.

Pyramid studs make these brown boots anything but basic.

A simple, elegant suede high-heel boot is a must-have for any winter wardrobe.

Wider calf riding boots can also be a challenge to find but SmartPak carries Fuller Fillies boots that come in a broader range of calf widths. Great for riding, showing or wearing out to dinner.

High and Dry

If you have ever spent much time in a wash rack scrubbing your horse for a big show or slogging through rain soaked streets you know the value of rubber boots. Hunter has long been my favorite go-to brand of wellies. They are durable, comfortable and come in a rainbow of colors.

Their traditional rain boots are mainly confined to the “horse” part of my closet but have occasionally been worn with skinny jeans on a rainy day running errands. That will all change thanks to Hunter’s newest style Lapins, a super tall, lace up the leg, high-heeled, high fashion version of their rain boot. It just may be the perfect marriage of high-style and high-function keeping your legs stylish and dry. Save your Hunter flat boots for the barn and bust out these on a rainy date night. Available online at,, and

Be The Designer, Be The Buyer

There are some major shifts happening in the fashion industry which gives everyday consumers more power in their choices. Influential fashion bloggers have slowly pulled themselves to equal with magazine editors, sharing front row runway seats and reaching viewers on par with magazine subscriptions. Some bloggers have even served as inspiration to many designers, street style blogs like The Sartorialist allow designers to view everyday fashions on real people . No longer do you have a select few dictating what the masses should be wearing, instead you have the masses speaking out about what they want.
Two websites have taken this concept even farther, allowing you the consumer the power to say what you want. allows fashion talents worldwide to upload their best designs; a worldwide audience discovers them and votes for their favorites and then the successful designs are put into production and available for purchase (splitting the proceeds with the designers). A truly cool place to find one of a kind pieces. has a “Be The Buyer” link on their site that showcases samples they are considering buying and allows you to vote for your favorites. You get to determine which items you would like to see offered for sale.

Jingle, Don’t Jiggle

Alright ladies, it’s that time again. The holidays and their festivity filled-events are fast approaching and now is the time to figure out what to wear. But before we venture down the path of Christmas casual versus cocktail and the pros and cons of wearing satin or velvet, we need to have a frank discussion about the importance of wearing the proper undergarments. Let’s face it, it’s far better to jingle this season than jiggle!

First and foremost, I can’t stress enough how important it is to look in a full-length mirror from all sides and angles as well as front and back before walking out of the house. I know this seems like common knowledge, but everyday I see women who obviously forgot this little tidbit of info. Once you assess how you look in the mirror, you can then take steps to eliminate panty lines, bra bulges and jiggly bits. The goal is to have a smooth, flawless silhouette, which can be achieved with the proper undergarments.

Here are a few of my favorite miracle workers. Trust me when I say, they are well worth spending your hard earned money on, especially when you get asked repeatedly if you have lost weight or complimented on how wonderful you look.

Let’s start with Spanx, the original miracle worker. Pretty much everything they make will help you look fabulous but these are my personal favorites.

Spanx Slim Cognito Shape-Slip and Slim Cognito Shape Suit: Both offer full body coverage, slimming your entire silhouette and are perfect to wear under dresses or fitted top and skirt combos.

Spanx Skinny Britches Short: Ultra light sheer fabric provides butt-boosting, tummy-taming, holiday cheer!

Spanx On Top and In Control Classic Scoop Tank: A truly go-to piece that you can wear everyday under everything. Buy one in black and white.

Spanx Tight End Tights: Hands down the best tights you will ever own. They slim the tummy, hips, thighs and rear while still being comfortable. They also come in a high rise version that eliminates the very unflattering spare tire that tights can sometimes give. Available in a variety of colors and patterns.

Not sure which Spanx is right for you? Check out their holiday dressing guide to lead you down the path to looking great, click here: Spanx Holiday Guide.

Soma Vanishing Edge Panties and Vanishing Edge Bra: The panties truly eliminate panty lines without having to wear a thong thanks to their smooth edges with silicone grippers that keep them comfortably in place. The bra provides silhouette smoothing coverage that eliminates bra lines and back bulges. Both are perfect companions to wear under light weight knit tops and bottoms as well as clingy satin. Just a personal side note: I ride horses and wear breeches (very tight, stretchy riding pants) that make it impossible to keep VPL at bay but the Vanishing Edge Panties don’t show up under my tightest breeches.

Victoria’s Secret Bio-Fit 7-Way Bra: The perfect solution to your holiday bra dilemmas, there are 7 ways to wear it: strapless, one strap, halter, classic, v-front, cross-front or crossback. So no matter which style dress you choose, this bra has you covered.

Don’t forget, the mirror is your friend!

Coat Check

The farmer’s almanac is predicting a numbing winter with below average temperatures for 2/3 of the country as well as average to above normal winter precipitation. That cold news coupled with below average temps in my home town has got me searching the web looking for a great new coat.

Lucky for me and you, designers must have predicted a colder than usual winter too, when they began dreaming up their fall/winter collections because unique statement making coats appear far and wide. There are so many great styles, colors and shapes that there is no reason to be left out in the cold.

Top This

Shopping can be tricky this time of year, stores are an eclectic mix of sale merchandise and new fall arrivals. Most of the sale merchandise is pretty picked over and it is probably too hot to wear many of the new fall items but occasionally you find the perfect buy now, wear now and later item that adds a pop of excitement to your worn out summer wardrobe and will be a centerpiece from which you can start your fall collection.

I blogged about a pair of Giani Bini shoes from Dillard’s that were a perfect example of buy now, wear now and later, you can read about them by clicking here. However, I have also found a perfect buy now, wear now and later top from J Crew. The silk Frances cami is the perfect piece to add to your closet. It is an elegant silk sleeveless top with a stand up collar and ruffled front that looks great paired with a pencil skirt or slim cropped pants now and later can be worn all fall layered under a variety of sweaters, cardigans and blazers. It also makes an interesting and feminine counterpoint to torn boyfriend jeans and for you working gals it will look beautiful under a suit. Available in a variety of colors, trust me you will want more than one, at your local J Crew stores and online at

You might want to hurry if you want one, rumor is they are selling fast and furious. By the way, ruffles are big for fall!
