High Volume

I have blogged before about various products I have used to gain full volume in my very straight, very fine hair and for the most part no product has worked perfectly in helping me achieve the high volume I crave. I am always on the lookout for new products that promise thicker, fuller hair. I recently tried Living Proof’s Full Thickening Cream and Hold Flexible Hairspray.

A little background on Living Proof: The company was founded by Polaris Venture Partners, one of the most successful venture capital firms in the world, and a team of scientists, including Dr. Bob Langer, an institute professor at MIT and one of history’s most prolific investors in medicine. This world-class ensemble allows Living Proof to look at everyday concerns from a completely unique, fresh perspective and thus create beauty products from a very scientific standpoint.

I figured if anybody could figure out how to give hair oumph, it would be MIT scientists, plus they had rave reviews with their line of No Frizz products.

Full Thickening Cream allows thin, fine hair to act like thick hair by depositing thickening points on hair strands, creating a thicker surface that enables fine hair to have natural movement and bounce, beautiful shape, and volume throughout the day. It has a creamy, non sticky texture that you run through your hair while wet and then style with a blow dryer. It did give my hair significant lift while maintaining shine and softness but toward the end of the day it started to fall and felt a little sticky. All in all not bad and certainly better than any other volumizers I have used before.

After styling my hair using the Full Thickening Cream I spritzed it with Hold Flexible Hairspray. Hold Flexible Hairspray is supposed to give amazing hold, add shine, block humidity and protect your style. I must say it did do all those things, but after a few sprays you won’t be able to run your fingers through your hair. It made my hair very sticky and hard, but held my cropped bob in place. It is the perfect product for creating female news anchor helmut hair but not necessarily for me, I will stick with L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray.

If you seek rich, voluminous hair then I would suggest buying the travel size of Living Proof’s Full Thickening Cream but leave the Hold Flexible Hairspray on the shelf. Both available at www.sephora.com.

Gimme Some Sugar

With Memorial Day, the official start to summer, fast approaching it is time to start buffing and polishing my legs and feet to perfection so they will look great in short skirts and flip flops. I am a devoted self-tanner user and if you, like me, prefer tan in a bottle over tan from the sun you know how very important it is to use an exfoliating body scrub prior to slathering on your self-tanner of choice.

This season I have decided to try an old favorite of beauty addicts in the know, Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish. It is the original, all natural sugar exfoliant that leaves your skin supremely soft after just one use. It blends brown sugar crystals with four precious oils of evening primrose, sweet almond, apricot kernel, and jojoba that nourish the skin and deeply moisturize dry areas. It also contains ginseng root extract and peppermint to invigorate the senses and revitalize skin cells as well as calendula to calm and soothe the skin. Citrus oils are also included to brighten and tone the skin while leaving behind an unforgettable natural scent.

This scrub leaves your skin so very soft and smooth, the perfect primer for your favorite self-tanner. You will instantly become addicted to this body polish (as will your significant other when he feels your skin) and reach for it everyday! Available online at www.sephora.com and www.fresh.com.

Go Natural

It seems that my eyelids have decided to revolt against all the nasty chemicals makeup manufacturers put in their eyeshadows. No matter what brand I have tried from expensive (Bobbi Brown) to cheap (CoverGirl) seems to make my eyelids red and irritated at the end of the day.

I had almost given up being able to wear eyeshadow, until I read the customer reviews on Sephora’s website about Josie Maran Cosmetics. One customer wrote that she had the same problem I have and that Josie Maran eyeshadows did not irritate her skin. I immediately dropped two eyeshadows (Beach and Pewter) into my shopping cart and eagerly awaited them to arrive. I have used them for over two weeks now and they work beautifully without causing any irritation. The eyeshadows are vibrant, velvety and easily glide on and stay put.

Josie Maran Cosmetics was formed with the idea of creating innovative formulas that use natural, non-toxic ingredients without parabens and fragrances in their cosmetics. They also do not do any animal testing and much of their packaging is biodegradable and recyclable. I am certainly a fan and plan to order more of her products! You can purchase Josie Maran Cosmetics online at www.josiemarancosmetics.com and www.sephora.com.

Challenge Yourself

Last night while stocking up on my favorite skincare products at Sephora I learned about a great promotion I thought I would share with you. Anytime you buy 4 skin care products throughout the entire year, you will get a free skincare product they are featuring.

If you , like me, buy various products (cleanser, moisturizer, toner, anti wrinkle cream etc…) you will gain that free product quickly! Sephora is also doing skincare consultations to help you find the best products for your skin. Visit your local Sephora store or go to www.sephora.com.

Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

Don’t worry today’s post has nothing to do with the military policy of don’t ask, don’t tell, it has to do with my irritation at Sephora. I recently learned from a former Sephora employee that if you ask for a sample they will give one for any product in the store. This caused me some annoyance because if I had known that or if my salesperson has informed me of this, it would of saved me some time and money.

I have been trying to find the perfect eye cream and each time I go into Sephora and ask for help they guide me to a product and I buy it, only to not like it once I get it home and give it a try. I guess the salesperson was too intent on making a sale to do the right thing and give me a couple of eye cream samples to take home and try. So in case you didn’t know, you have to ask for a sample because they don’t seem to offer them up on their own! Next time you are out shopping make sure you ask for a sample before you make an investment, it will save you time and money in the long run.

Just A Tip or Few: Best Beauty Tips

The Fall 2009 InStyle Makeover issue had a wonderful article with the 50 Best Beauty Tips of All Time. I am a sucker for tips especially beauty tips so I thought I would pass along a few of the best. Enjoy!

Enhance Your Conditioner: Warm it up in a microwave safe bowl for 15 seconds. The heat helps open up the hair cuticle, causing the conditioner to penetrate more deeply.

Plump Up Your Lips: Dab your lips with peppermint oil, it’s an instant lip plumper.

Zap Frizz: Wrap wet hair in a towel that’s been soaked in ice water. This seals the shaft, so as your hair dries, it will stay frizz free.

Heal Dry Hands: Rub the inside of a lemon directly onto the backside of your hands. Lemons have high concentrations of citric acid and vitamin c, which stimulate connective tissue production.

Wake Up Tired Eyes: Apply black mascara, then tip the ends of your lashes with a mascara in plum or navy to make the whites of your eyes look brighter.

Add Oomph To Lips: Always keep a sheer golden lip gloss in your makeup bag. It instantly warms up any lip color and gives you a brand new shade.

Erase Nail Stains: Soak fingers in denture cleaner for about three minutes. The liquid’s oxidizing agents will help remove stains.

Create Liquid Liner: Add a few eyedrops to a dark eye shadow. The drops are mess free and sterile, which means you won’t introduce bacteria into your makeup.

Get No Budge Shadow: For a creamy eye shadow that won’t crease, use waterproof eyeliner pencil. Draw over the eyelid, then blend with finger.

All tips courtesy of InStyle Makeover. If you love reading tips head over to www.toptipsforgirls.com it is full of great tips on a wide variety of topics.

Love It

I am seriously addicted to and in love with Fresh Sugar Rose Tinted Lip Treatment. It is the perfect blend of moisturizing chap stick, skin saving spf 15 and sheer rose tinted color. This lip treatment hydrates, repairs and protects lips while also imparting a soft natural pinky-red color. It also soothes chapped lips and helps diminish fine lines. Plus it does all of this without the use of harmful chemicals like petroleum, parabens, sulfates, synthetic dyes and phthalates. One swipe and you will be in love too, bye bye boring chapstick and drying matte lipstick! Available at your local Sephora stores and online at www.sephora.com.

Lash Out

I have yet to find a mascara that I love and have spent a pretty penny trying quite a few brands from drugstore to department store. But, thanks to Sephora I can now try a whole bunch of mascaras for a fraction of the cost. Sephora has put together a lash sampler featuring sample sizes of 11 different mascaras for $39. A steal when I think of all the half used tubes laying in my makeup drawer, due to the sample size I can try it out and then toss it away and move on to the next in hopes I find the perfect mascara! Check out the Lashstash Mascara Deluxe Sampler at www.sephora.com. If mascara is not your thing check out all the other samplers they have put together from perfume to lipstick by clicking here. These sampler sets also make perfect gifts!

By the way, if you have been lucky to find the perfect mascara please leave me a comment telling me your fave!

Get Your Glow On

We all know tanning is not good for us but we also know that we look better with a bit of sun kissed color when wearing summer’s clothes. So instead of tanning reach for a sunless tanner to get the fresh from the beach or pool look. I am currently reaching for and loving Nivea’s Sun Kissed Beautiful Legs sunless tanner. It is a lightweight moisturizing self tanner that dries quickly and leaves legs soft, smooth and a natural looking tan. It also contains shave minimizers which allows your tan to last longer by minimizing the need to shave so often. It is an all around win win! Available at your local drug store or grocery store.
