Pretty Please

Stores are starting to push their summer sale merchandise aside to allow room for a smattering of new fall-ish merchandise. I couldn’t be more excited after a ho-hum spring/summer fashion season for new exciting fall clothing. One of my favorite stores, White House Black Market, has just introduced their first hit of fall and I am seriously in love with this very pretty, very elegant dress.

I am staunchly in the camp that believes fashion should, first and foremost, be pretty and flattering to the wearer. This dress is the epitome of pretty and it’s cinched in waist, swingy skirt and ruffled collar will render every wearer seriously elegant. I am hoping that this dress is the start of many beautiful things to wear now and later as fall approaches. I am over the mannish, overly big and edgy looks that dominated summer wear, bring on the pretty! Ruffle Chemise available at www.whitehouseblackmarket.com.

C-O-M-F-Y

If I had to sum up my personal style in one phrase, it would probably be comfy with a twist. As much as I love crazy, beautiful fashions and will occasionally submit to the torture that comes with high fashion, I tend to look for stylish pieces that are easy and comfortable to wear. You can imagine my delight that leggings and the loose and easy dresses and tunics that top them, are still so stylish. They are a beyond easy way to dress!

The newest addition to my comfy wardrobe comes by way of one of my favorite local boutiques and Michael Stars. This racer back tank dress is made from soft, slinky modal fabric that gently skims the body and looks great layered over a tank and cropped leggings. It is lightweight and easy to wear. Dress it up with long layered necklaces, an armful of bangles and embellished sandals or wear it casual with flip flops and a big watch. Available online at www.revolveclothing.com.

Holly Golightly

I, like many fashionistas, draw inspiration from the iconic Audrey Hepburn and her slew of glamorously dressed characters. My favorite, of course, being Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The infamous black dress she wore while eating breakfast in front of Tiffany’s has forever stuck in my head as one of my all time favorite dresses.

You can imagine my delight when Milly used that same inspiration to design their Peau De Soie Tiffany dress. This elegant silk satin dress has a bejeweled pearl and rhinestone collar that mimics the exact lines of the dress in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It is very elegant and chic and fits beautifully and I can happily say is now hanging in my closet waiting for a night out! Available online at www.neimanmarcus.com. I could only post a picture of the front of the dress click on the Neiman Marcus link to see the back it looks exactly like the original.

Back Story

You know how they say that mullet hairstyles are business in the front and party in the back, well I always thought that was a pretty stupid but funny way to describe them. But I am ashamed to admit that when I saw these two dresses by Twelfth St by Cynthia Vincent and Alice + Olivia that exact phrase popped into my head, albeit in a more glamorous and fashionable way (mullets have never and will never be considered stylish). Both of these dresses are exactly that, business in the front and party in the back, they are simple and elegant from the front but as soon as you turn around they are sexy and daring with details that jazz up their simple silhouettes. These dresses will make an entrance and an exit. Simply Gorgeous!

Cocktails Anyone?

It is hard to imagine that fall and holiday parties are just around the corner and with that comes the need for a gorgeous cocktail dress. I always seem to spend way too much money on cocktail dresses, many of which I only wear once, but I have found a great go-to store with an amazing selection of gorgeous cocktail dresses all year long. Check out the selection of dresses at your nearest White House Black Market store or online at www.whitehouseblackmarket.com. Their cocktail dresses are classic yet on-trend, elegant and well-fitting as well as come in a wide range of sizes and styles to fit all body types. Plus, they are all wonderful quality at a great price.

This dress is stunning on and really shows off your waist and curves, perfect for a wedding or work party.

This dress is perfect if you have a small bust and straight figure or small bust with a little hip.

These two strapless dresses are perfect for bustier and curvier girls, the smooth bodice tops hold you in while the ruching and side draping hides tummies and hips.

This rosette dress looks like it belongs on the red carpet and looks like something Michelle Obama would wear. The rosette detailing is perfect for showing off toned arms and your neck and shoulders.

This striped tulle dress looks incredible on because the criss-cross ribbon detail cinches in the waist giving anyone an hour-glass figure. The twirl skirt is perfect for a night of dancing.

Black Is The New Black

I guess I am on a black dress kick, it seems that is all I am drawn to when I shop these days (see The Perfect LBD). I peeked into Ann Taylor over the weekend and ended up walking out with yet another black dress with no real place or event in mind to wear it. Mind you I tried on 3 black dresses before I decided on the one I bought. They just looked too good hanging there on the rack for me to pass up. So I give to you three great black dresses worth making a trip to Ann Taylor to try on. Available online at www.anntaylor.com.

The dress I bought: It is beyond flattering on and the cool collar is instantly chic, I am thinking of wearing it with a big, chunky layered necklace and some chunky Calvin Klein shoes from Zappos to tone down the lady-like effect of the dress.

This dress is super cute on and very slimming, perfect to wear to work.

This dress looks like something Black Halo would make but at a much more reasonable price and it fits really well.

The Perfect LBD

As a young fashionista-in-training it is ingrained into your head that you must have at all times the perfect LBD (little black dress). The idea being that one perfect, well cut, well made LBD can be worn season after season and is always there for you to wear in a pinch (ie work dinner party, last minute surprise party or hot guy you have been crushing on finally asks you for drinks). Ultimately this LBD can be changed up to look fresh and hip each season by adding trendy accessories and great shoes.

This all sounds great in theory but my problem has always been that I buy what I think is the perfect LBD but inevitably I am buying it because it is trendy and when the next season rolls around I realize that the one-shoulder style or the wide loose fit or whatever just looks dated and I start my search again for the perfect little black dress. But I am thrilled to say I have finally found two mythical, perfect LBDs that can look chic from season to season. Leave it to J Crew to know exactly how to make these perfect closet staples, that are so well made they can be worn for years and years while still looking timelessly elegant.

Both dresses are made from Super 120’s merino wool and 120 refers to the measure of the yarn and the higher the number, the finer the yarn thus making the fabric of these dresses soft, silky and with great drape. They also boast simple, timeless and elegant cuts that will flatter any figure as well as serve as a great backdrop for a wide range of accessories. They can be worn with flats, heels, boots, tights, fishnets, scarves, bangles, necklaces, belts, jackets, cardigans and the list goes on, you name it, you can wear it to customize a new look. These dresses are ready to go from the conference room to cocktails at a moment’s notice. Available at www.jcrew.com.

Not Practical

Sometimes clothes look better in a designer’s head or on a mannequin and when it comes to production and an actual person having to wear the garment the whole idea just does not translate or really work. Such is the case with the “I’ll Do It My Way” dress by Sass & Bide. I guess you will have to do it your way to make it work, because there is no way you could keep it in place with hardly any back support and very small panels of fabric in the front, low cut dresses tend to have an “anchor” at the neck or a fitted back to keep the low cut front in place and looking decent.

Or maybe the “I’ll Do It My Way” came when someone criticized the wearability of the dress and the designer said in a snit “I’ll Do It My Way.” Who really knows, but what I do know is that this dress will take a tremendous amount of work to make it wearable, I guess you could layer another tank underneath but why bother when there are so many other cute dresses out there that were designed to fit properly. Full Volume-How To Wear A Maxi Dress

I will admit it, I was not a big fan of maxi dresses when they first came out. They just seemed big and unflattering and the name maxi even put me off, like something you see on the side of a feminine hygiene product. But as the thermometer rises and it gets harder to look cool and stylish I have become a convert to the maxi dress.

Yes they are full of volume but if purchased with the correct shape and fit they can be very flattering as well as extremely cool and comfy. They are also very versatile because they can be dressed up and down with accessories you already own. They are perfect for trips and vacations because they are easy to pack and they can pull double duty as an outfit or a swimsuit cover up. Wear it one day with flip flops for sightseeing and another night out with wedges and layered necklaces, they also look great layered with a denim jacket or cardigan.

A few tips to keep in mind while shopping for a maxi dress:

Do Buy a maxi dress in the correct length for your height or get it hemmed, too long dresses look sloppy and cause you to trip.

Avoid gathered waists if you are bulky around the middle and make sure the top fits “the girls” properly, no one wants to see them spilling out nor do you want to spend all day pulling the top up. Make sure the dress skims instead of clings.

Avoid bright, crazy and loud prints, they can make you look heavier, opt for fun graphic or soft floral prints and you can never go wrong with solid colors.

Do accessorize with long layered necklaces, stacks of bangles, hoop earrings, belts or a summer scarf.

Do shop around, great maxi dresses can be found at a wide variety of stores in a range of prices, colors and styles.

Last but not least, please do not wear your maxi dress with cowboy boots, opt for flip flops, gladiator sandals or wedges and use caution when wearing with pumps they just seem too sophisticated for the bohemian look of the maxi dress.

For a great selection of maxi dresses check out www.shopbop.com.

Pair this Juicy Couture maxi dress with yellow bejeweled Mystique flip flips (www.piperlime.com) and colorful Juicy Couture Bangles (www.shop.nordstrom.com).

You can never go wrong with this black strapless maxi dress by Velvet, sleek, slimming and elegant, pair with these purple Seychelles gladiators (www.piperlime.com) and a scattered glass statement making necklace (www.jcrew.com).

Two super cute maxi dresses from Alice + Olivia and Velvet.
