What To Wear: Outdoor BBQ Birthday Party

I have come to realize I am an event driven shopper, while I love to shop and am constantly looking for great items, I really kick it in gear when I have somewhere to go. This being said, I really look at clothes in a “what would I wear this to” way instead of a “wow, that is pretty, I must have it” way. So, I decided to start a new feature on this blog called What To Wear (fittingly that was the name of my clothing store). In each What To Wear section I will put outfits together for a variety of events with links for each item so you can click on to buy, shopping made simple!

My first What To Wear feature centers around the perfect outfit for an outdoor barbeque birthday party (which I just had this weekend for my husband’s birthday), or pretty much any casual summer get together.

Start your outfit with this gorgeous peach, silver and gold brocade party top from J Crew. I bought it in the blush stone but it also comes in cobblestone (featured on the model). It’s silky, luminescent fabric elegantly states party.

Then add this casual pair of Joe’s Jeans cuffed capris to dress down the top, so it says pretty but relaxed.

Next add these Yellow Box gold, jeweled flip flops to mirror the gold on the top while sticking to the casual vibe.

Top it off with this gold and pearl bracelet from J Crew and simple pearl stud earrings.

Two For Two

J Crew hasn’t really delivered for me this season but their newest catalog contained two awesome dresses that are perfect for summer. They take casual chic to a whole new level. Their loose, airy fit will keep you cool when the summer sun beats down while their simple silhouettes will allow you to pair them with your statement jewelry and shoes. Available online at www.jcrew.com.

The Effie Scarf Dress is based on a vintage flapper dress J Crew designers found in a vintage store. Wear it during the day with a 3/4 sleeve cardigan and sandals and then pair it with super high, chunky heels and layered necklaces for evening. Available in three colors.

I think this may be the perfect throw it on and go dress, it is made from a heavyweight cotton slub fabric and the drawstring waist provide shape without sacrificing comfort. Wear it with white jack purcells and no socks to up the cute comfort quotient.

Five For Five: J Crew

J Crew is my go-to store when I need great basics and occasionally they have beautiful fashion pieces too. This season, I am sad to say, is not their best, but there are still some great pieces to be had that will serve you well this season. All pieces available online at www.jcrew.com.

J Crew has a great selection of tees in a variety of styles and colors at great prices that you can add to your closet. This 3/4 sleeve henley is light and airy with a long silhouette. It gets dressed up by layered silk along the neckline and the pocket.

Utility chic jackets are a must have for spring and I love this silk taffeta riveter coat in sunshine yellow. Wear it on a rainy day to put a little spring in your step. If the yellow is too bright for you, it also comes in a pale pink. The color and fabric make it a little more elegant than other safari/utility jackets.

I love mixing casual pieces with elegant items to create an unusual, yet stylish pairing. This metallic jacquard silk skirt is perfect to pair with a tee and sandals but will also work perfect in a pinch for a dressier event when paired with a silk ruffled blouse and heels. The color is warm and buttery and looks like you are wearing liquid gold.

J Crew’s jewelry collection continues to impress each season and this layered, jumbled ribbon necklace looks like it was pulled from a Paris flea market. This stunning necklace can be worn with anything and everything to add a dash of bold exuberance.

I would be lost without J Crew’s flip flops. They are easy to wear and oh so simple and chic. This leather pair accented with a suede flower will look equally at home with shorts, jeans, wide leg trousers, skirts and dresses.

Finely Feathered

Feathers are a whimsical detail that designers have started adding to everything from headbands to shoes to hems of dresses, creating beautiful, wearable elegance. This season, shoes seems to be the item of choice to embellish with feathers and this new crop is nothing but extraordinary. Feathered pumps or flats instantly dress up a pair of jeans or skinny cords and lend a trendy edge to a simple black dress. Now if only I can decide which pair to buy!

These super special feathered pumps from Pedro Garcia will be an investment piece that will carry you through in style. The green pumps will add depth to black and gray clothes and the tan pumps can be worn like a neutral with everything. Available at www.shopbop.com.

These feathered detail flats and pumps from J. Crew have a sweet vintage look that will help soften thick winter fabrics. Available at www.jcrew.com.

The Perfect LBD

As a young fashionista-in-training it is ingrained into your head that you must have at all times the perfect LBD (little black dress). The idea being that one perfect, well cut, well made LBD can be worn season after season and is always there for you to wear in a pinch (ie work dinner party, last minute surprise party or hot guy you have been crushing on finally asks you for drinks). Ultimately this LBD can be changed up to look fresh and hip each season by adding trendy accessories and great shoes.

This all sounds great in theory but my problem has always been that I buy what I think is the perfect LBD but inevitably I am buying it because it is trendy and when the next season rolls around I realize that the one-shoulder style or the wide loose fit or whatever just looks dated and I start my search again for the perfect little black dress. But I am thrilled to say I have finally found two mythical, perfect LBDs that can look chic from season to season. Leave it to J Crew to know exactly how to make these perfect closet staples, that are so well made they can be worn for years and years while still looking timelessly elegant.

Both dresses are made from Super 120’s merino wool and 120 refers to the measure of the yarn and the higher the number, the finer the yarn thus making the fabric of these dresses soft, silky and with great drape. They also boast simple, timeless and elegant cuts that will flatter any figure as well as serve as a great backdrop for a wide range of accessories. They can be worn with flats, heels, boots, tights, fishnets, scarves, bangles, necklaces, belts, jackets, cardigans and the list goes on, you name it, you can wear it to customize a new look. These dresses are ready to go from the conference room to cocktails at a moment’s notice. Available at www.jcrew.com.

Well Made

While on vacation a few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of shopping in a Madewell store. Madewell is J Crew’s latest spin off that opened a little over a year ago. Their intent was to create a smaller, well edited line of must have basics which centered around great denim. All of their looks and styles are trendy but still very accessible and wearable. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I walked in because unfortunately you can not shop from their website, all sales are made through phone orders or at the stores.

Since the line is focused on denim I decided I better try a few pairs on and see if they lived up to the hype. I had the salesperson help me pick out a few styles to try and while she was putting them in a dressing room I was drawn to the racks of super soft colorful tees and immediately started grabbing one of each style and color to try.

I loved every pair of jeans I tried on, the fit and fabric was amazing! You could tell the designers spent a tremendous amount of time getting it right. I would recommend trying a pair of the Rail Straight jeans, the skinny leg is elongating and they sit at the perfect spot on your waist and hips without gaping.

The t-shirts were also wonderful, long in length with flattering necklines and the sleeves were the perfect length, they hit mid upper arm, which is so much more slimming that those silly tees that barely cover your shoulders and make all arms look chunky. They were definitely buy in bulk, wear all the time kind of tees.

Madewell is well worth making a trip to and if you do not have one in your city, visit one that does and make friends with the salesperson so you can call her and have her send you new stuff! Madewell reminds me of what Gap used to be, the perfect spot to fill in the holes in your closet! Check out their website at www.madewell1937.com.

Cheap Trick

Extra long, lightweight cotton cardigans are the perfect transition into spring items. Layer one over a long sleeve tee paired with a scarf and skinny leg jeans on a cool day or throw it on over a strapless dress or shift on a warm day. These cardigans are super versatile and popping up everywhere from Target to Gap to your local high end boutique.

However, I couldn’t help noticing today as I was shopping how very similar the one from Splendid ($189) is to the Mossimo cardigan from Target ($14). Granted the Splendid cardigan is buttery soft and decadent but with that big of a price difference you have to reach for the Mossimo cardigan, leaving you more money to spend on other must haves. Splendid cardigan available at www.revolveclothing.com and Mossimo cardigan available at www.target.com. Check out Gap and J Crew’s selection of reasonably priced rainbow hued cardigans.

I am a sucker for novelty tees and whenever I see one, I have to buy it. I guess, my obsession stems from the fact that I like to be comfortable. Novelty tees are perfect for me because they are first and foremost tees which makes them soft and comfy to wear and because they are novelty they have added details like buttons, ruching, trimmings, collars or interesting shapes that makes them more fashion forward than your basic tee. They pretty much go with everything in my closet making getting dressed a cinch. Taking into account all these factors and their ability to fulfill all my fashion needs, they may just be the most perfect creation.

My newest novelty tee obsession comes from J. Crew, the gurus of fashionable basics. Their Tuxedo Front Top, available in black, white and champagne is made out of super soft lightweight cotton with a woven tuxedo front and cuffs. It has a loose easy fit and can be worn slouchy with khakis and jeans or paired with slacks tucked in with a big belt. This shirt is the perfect combo of comfy and stylish. It tends to run big so size down if you order it online. Available at www.jcrew.com.
