Two For Two

J Crew hasn’t really delivered for me this season but their newest catalog contained two awesome dresses that are perfect for summer. They take casual chic to a whole new level. Their loose, airy fit will keep you cool when the summer sun beats down while their simple silhouettes will allow you to pair them with your statement jewelry and shoes. Available online at www.jcrew.com.

The Effie Scarf Dress is based on a vintage flapper dress J Crew designers found in a vintage store. Wear it during the day with a 3/4 sleeve cardigan and sandals and then pair it with super high, chunky heels and layered necklaces for evening. Available in three colors.

I think this may be the perfect throw it on and go dress, it is made from a heavyweight cotton slub fabric and the drawstring waist provide shape without sacrificing comfort. Wear it with white jack purcells and no socks to up the cute comfort quotient.

Gimme Some Sugar

With Memorial Day, the official start to summer, fast approaching it is time to start buffing and polishing my legs and feet to perfection so they will look great in short skirts and flip flops. I am a devoted self-tanner user and if you, like me, prefer tan in a bottle over tan from the sun you know how very important it is to use an exfoliating body scrub prior to slathering on your self-tanner of choice.

This season I have decided to try an old favorite of beauty addicts in the know, Fresh Brown Sugar Body Polish. It is the original, all natural sugar exfoliant that leaves your skin supremely soft after just one use. It blends brown sugar crystals with four precious oils of evening primrose, sweet almond, apricot kernel, and jojoba that nourish the skin and deeply moisturize dry areas. It also contains ginseng root extract and peppermint to invigorate the senses and revitalize skin cells as well as calendula to calm and soothe the skin. Citrus oils are also included to brighten and tone the skin while leaving behind an unforgettable natural scent.

This scrub leaves your skin so very soft and smooth, the perfect primer for your favorite self-tanner. You will instantly become addicted to this body polish (as will your significant other when he feels your skin) and reach for it everyday! Available online at www.sephora.com and www.fresh.com.

Denim Digs

If denim is the mainstay of your wardrobe then you will be thrilled to see Net-A-Porter’s new online denim boutique. It is well stocked with great denim and well organized by size, fit, body type and style. They also have great editorial about denim that includes a fit guide by body style (boyish, long legs, petite, hourglass and curvy) that suggests styles to try as well as a section on how to care for your denim once you have found the perfect pair.

But what makes this denim boutique stand out from other online shops, is it’s measuring guide that tells you exactly how to measure yourself to find the right size and when you click on each pair of jeans you can click on it’s very thorough measurements and compare them to yours to see which size will fit you the best. You can also compare the measurements to those from your favorite pair of jeans. Jean shopping made simple! Available at www.net-a-porter.com.

Ring Around

Cocktail rings have held on to their must-have status and are an easy way to spice up a simple outfit. This season bigger is better in all aspects of fashion and it holds true for cocktail rings. You can find cocktail rings in a wide range of styles, materials and price ranges allowing you to choose what you really love.

There are a few rules to keep in mind when wearing a cocktail ring. Avoid wearing other rings on the same hand as the cocktail ring and if you wear a wedding ring, wear your cocktail ring on the opposite hand. Keep the rest of your jewelry relatively simple to allow the cocktail ring to take center stage.

Free People has an amazing selection of cocktail rings (photographed with models wearing them so you get an accurate idea of their size) available on their website www.freepeople.com.

Bright Future

Brightly colored watches are popping up on the wrists of fashionable women everywhere. They are a fun and sporty way to add a bit of color to your wardrobe and seem to look perfect with all the neutrals dominating the spring color palette. The only problem is which color do you choose!

Here are a few of my faves:

The Fossil Berkley Watch comes in a wide range of colors (I am leaning towards the yellow) and is priced at $95. Available at www.fossil.com.

Michael Kors also has a selection of gorgeous, juicy colored watches, they are a bit of a splurge at $195, but hey your worth it! Available at www.michaelkors.com.

Long Story

If there is one thing you can’t have enough of, it’s long cardigans in varying sleeve lengths and weights. They do everything from add polish to an outfit to keeping you warm in the winter and warm in over air-conditioning in the spring and summer. My favorite look this spring is to wear a long, loose cardigan belted over a silk tank paired with skinny, rolled up denim capris. They also look great worn over tunics and leggings or fun summer dresses.

My newest favorite cardigan is this extra long, silk linen version from Boden. It’s fabric is lightweight and silky with 3/4 length sleeves and hits a few inches above the knee. The longer length will pair well with tunics, dresses and skinny jeans while also lengthening your torso creating a long, lean silhouette. The lightweight fabric and 3/4 length sleeves make it the perfect piece to cover your arms by wearing over sleeveless tops and dresses. Available in blue, light brown, silver and coral online at www.bodenusa.com.

Go Natural

It seems that my eyelids have decided to revolt against all the nasty chemicals makeup manufacturers put in their eyeshadows. No matter what brand I have tried from expensive (Bobbi Brown) to cheap (CoverGirl) seems to make my eyelids red and irritated at the end of the day.

I had almost given up being able to wear eyeshadow, until I read the customer reviews on Sephora’s website about Josie Maran Cosmetics. One customer wrote that she had the same problem I have and that Josie Maran eyeshadows did not irritate her skin. I immediately dropped two eyeshadows (Beach and Pewter) into my shopping cart and eagerly awaited them to arrive. I have used them for over two weeks now and they work beautifully without causing any irritation. The eyeshadows are vibrant, velvety and easily glide on and stay put.

Josie Maran Cosmetics was formed with the idea of creating innovative formulas that use natural, non-toxic ingredients without parabens and fragrances in their cosmetics. They also do not do any animal testing and much of their packaging is biodegradable and recyclable. I am certainly a fan and plan to order more of her products! You can purchase Josie Maran Cosmetics online at www.josiemarancosmetics.com and www.sephora.com.

Get The Skinny

Skinny jeans are a must-have for spring to balance out the larger proportion shirts that are dominating store racks. (See Big Is In to learn more about the big, baggy trend.) I seem to have a hard time finding skinny jeans that fit, if they fit around my waist they seem to be too tight in the thigh and if they fit in the thigh they are way too big around the waist. I think designers have forgotten that not all women have toothpick model legs and need to design accordingly.

If you, like me, have a hard time finding skinny jeans that fit comfortably you will love these new skinny jeans from J. Jill. I know, you are asking yourself can J. Jill really make stylish looking skinny jeans. That was my thought too until I tried them on. I stopped in there the other day when I was shopping with my mom and decided to try them on while she was shopping.

I was thrilled when I pulled them on, zipped them up and realized they fit perfectly around the waist (not too high, not too low) and the leg was fitted and slim but not squeezing too tight. They had just enough stretch to make them fitted yet comfortable. The midnight wash is super dark and makes them look very expensive (when in reality they only cost $79). They are definitely worth a try and my pair has replaced my skinny 7 for all mankind jeans permanently! Available online at www.jjill.com.

C-O-M-F-Y

If I had to sum up my personal style in one phrase, it would probably be comfy with a twist. As much as I love crazy, beautiful fashions and will occasionally submit to the torture that comes with high fashion, I tend to look for stylish pieces that are easy and comfortable to wear. You can imagine my delight that leggings and the loose and easy dresses and tunics that top them, are still so stylish. They are a beyond easy way to dress!

The newest addition to my comfy wardrobe comes by way of one of my favorite local boutiques and Michael Stars. This racer back tank dress is made from soft, slinky modal fabric that gently skims the body and looks great layered over a tank and cropped leggings. It is lightweight and easy to wear. Dress it up with long layered necklaces, an armful of bangles and embellished sandals or wear it casual with flip flops and a big watch. Available online at www.revolveclothing.com.

Big Is In

This weekend I made a tour of my favorite local boutiques scoping out new spring merchandise and I began to notice an interesting, often unseen in fashion, trend that “big is in”. Every boutique had a wide selection of loose, silky, baggy shirts in a variety of styles, all extra big. For the most part fashion has always followed the “thin is in” style with clothes designed to show off svelte bodies but it seems now designers have decided to try a bigger, looser look.

I am not sure what I really think about this, on one hand many of the styles will fit and appeal to a wider variety of body styles but on the other if you have worked hard to look slim they certainly won’t do your figure any favors. I think when worn correctly they can look cute as long as you pair slim pants on bottom. You also don’t have to wear the shirts quite as big as the designers intend, try wearing them in a size or two smaller than you normally wear. I am not sure this trend will last long, so I would only invest in one loose, silky, dressy blouse and stick with exploring the trend with loose t-shirts/dresses by Alexander Wang, Vince and Michael Stars that you can easily pair with leggings for a comfy stylish look.

What do you think? Do you like the “big is in” trend?
