Spring 2011 Trend Report: Bold Color

I decided to kick off my Spring 2011 Trend Report to beat the winter blues. It is currently snowing outside and I am dreaming of warmer, sunnier days. Take a break from winter and look forward to spring as I bring you the hot, new trends.

Let’s kick it off with color! It’s mixed bag as far as color is concerned; bright citrus hues like juicy orange, happy lemon and coral pink will share space with cool shades of turquoise and blue as well as soothing neutrals like cream, peach, tan and white. Invest in neutral shoes, bags and pants and add a pop of color with juicy hued dresses and tops. Don’t be afraid to mix and match colors that complement each other.

Color, Color Everywhere:

My favorite color combo:

Shift Into Neutral:

Mix bright colors with crisp white:

Neutrals can look rich and decadent:

Five For Five: Piperlime

For day five of my five stores, five days and five must haves I decided to mix it up a bit and bring you five awesome pairs of shoes from Piperlime. Piperlime is one of my all time favorite online shoe stores that also carries a great selection of trendy clothing labels. One can waste many a hour perusing the great merchandise at www.piperlime.com.

Go global for spring with these gladiator style sandals. The basket weave detail provides an interesting texture and the brown and cream color palette will work well with spring’s neutral colors.

There isn’t much to say about these shoes other than how cool are they?! The crochet detail will add style to jean capris and tees as well as complement more stylish skirts and dresses. The neutral color will also complement a wide range of colors.

These black and white t-straps are the epitome of lady like chic, cool and classic. They are the perfect go-to heels for a slew of spring and summer parties and weddings.

Wear your heart on your sleeve, or make that your feet with these quirky teal wedges. Fun, colorful shoes will breathe new life into your tried and true spring outfits from last season, even adding whimsy to your favorite little black dress.

I must admit I love high heels but for the most part I am a jeans (or my husband would argue black yoga pants) and tennis shoe kind of gal so no shoe wardrobe would be complete without a new pair of sneaks. These purple Pumas are fun and colorful and if the purple is too much they also come in a sophisticated mix of white and gold.

Five For Five: J Crew

J Crew is my go-to store when I need great basics and occasionally they have beautiful fashion pieces too. This season, I am sad to say, is not their best, but there are still some great pieces to be had that will serve you well this season. All pieces available online at www.jcrew.com.

J Crew has a great selection of tees in a variety of styles and colors at great prices that you can add to your closet. This 3/4 sleeve henley is light and airy with a long silhouette. It gets dressed up by layered silk along the neckline and the pocket.

Utility chic jackets are a must have for spring and I love this silk taffeta riveter coat in sunshine yellow. Wear it on a rainy day to put a little spring in your step. If the yellow is too bright for you, it also comes in a pale pink. The color and fabric make it a little more elegant than other safari/utility jackets.

I love mixing casual pieces with elegant items to create an unusual, yet stylish pairing. This metallic jacquard silk skirt is perfect to pair with a tee and sandals but will also work perfect in a pinch for a dressier event when paired with a silk ruffled blouse and heels. The color is warm and buttery and looks like you are wearing liquid gold.

J Crew’s jewelry collection continues to impress each season and this layered, jumbled ribbon necklace looks like it was pulled from a Paris flea market. This stunning necklace can be worn with anything and everything to add a dash of bold exuberance.

I would be lost without J Crew’s flip flops. They are easy to wear and oh so simple and chic. This leather pair accented with a suede flower will look equally at home with shorts, jeans, wide leg trousers, skirts and dresses.

Five For Five: White House Black Market

Stores are filling, fast and furious, with spring merchandise. Sunny, warmer days are ahead, as are light and airy clothes. I have taken some of the headache out of shopping and plan to present to you five days, five stores and five must haves from each of my favorite stores. Today I am kicking it off with five must haves from White House Black Market, they always have a modern yet timeless selection of clothes as well as the best black and white pants you will ever find.

Without further ado, my five must haves all available on www.whitehouseblackmarket.com:

This striped cardigan is super soft and lightweight, perfect for spring’s unpredictable weather as well as over-air conditioned buildings in the summer. It can be worn with everything in your closet and the stripes are very on trend this season. It is also the perfect piece to travel with, providing a light layer that’s lightweight enough not to weigh your bags down. Wear it open and loose, tied at the waist or wrapped around and tied behind.

This silk safari tunic blouse in buttery khaki is a lightweight piece that is super flattering on and looks great paired with skinny jeans or capris in dark denim or white and embellished gladiator sandals.

Skinny, cropped white jeans just scream Jackie O on a yacht style and are a major must have. Easy to wear with loose tunics and a multitude of shoes from heels, to flats to flip flops. Dress them up or dress them down.

Let’s just admit it, we all have “fat” days and this diamond print halter tunic is perfect for fat days or pretty much any day. It is loose and comfortable while still being stylish and flattering. Wear it alone on hot days or layer over leggings with a long cardigan for cool days. It doesn’t get any easier.

Everyone needs a great dress that can be an easy go-to for weddings and parties but this dress can also be worn to work. This halter sheath dress is chic enough to keep pace with with other cocktail dresses but structured enough to wear to work paired with a cardigan or jacket.

Spring Fashion Trends

Spring is so very close, I can smell it in the air! While researching the top trends for spring I noticed that for the most part spring fashion is a hodge-podge of all kinds of things. Designers were all over the place, but here is a list my favorite spring trends that are very wearable.

Shift In To Neutral

Neutral tones, champagne, beige and all shades of gray, ruled the runways and are popping up in every store. Add a fun tank and dress in a neutral shade to your spring wardrobe to be on trend but beware if you are fair, make sure to user self-tanner and bronzer to keep from looking washed out.

Two cute neutrals from J Crew.

Loosen Up

Trousers loosen up for spring giving our thighs and hips a break. Loose, slouchy trousers look cool and relaxed when paired with wedges and fitted tanks and jackets.

Shopbop has a huge selection of slouchy trousers.

Stripes, Stripes, Stripes

Preppy looks frequented the runway lead in part by stripes on everything from tops to skirts to socks. Stripes always look bright and fresh for spring and one or two pieces will easily fit in with your wardrobe.

I love this stripe skirt from Kate Spade and this sweater from Anthropologie.

Mix and Match

Bright, wild prints dominated the runways and printed pieces will add cheer to spring. Designers often mixed and matched contrasting prints which I encourage if you have a good eye, but if not stick with adding one brightly colored print item.

Both of these pieces from Anthropologie are an easy and chic way to add prints to your style, just don’t wear them together!

A Quick Word On Denim

Loose, slouchy boyfriend jeans and skinny cropped jeans continue to share space with skinny long jeans, jeggings and basic bootcut jeans. Many brands are showing ripped up, destroyed denim but don’t buy an expensive pair, I think it will soon be a passe trend. As far as color goes, you will see a comeback of lighter washes as well as your basic dark colors. It is better to avoid trends and just find jeans that fit you really well and look great.

J Crew has a good variety of jeans at a good price.

Dreaming of Tropical Weather

I am writing this curled up on my sofa with a warm fire crackling in the background while snow is gently swirling to the ground outside, making it look like everything has been dusted with powdered sugar. While it sounds cozy and serene, it is not all it is cracked up to be and I am longing for bright sunny days where island breezes tickle your neck and the sun warms your shoulders. Since those days are weeks away I can live out my island fantasy courtesy of Trina Turk. She has posted her resort, spring and summer lookbooks on her website, www.trinaturk.com. The pictures are beautifully shot in warm, tropical locales featuring models wearing bright and colorful dresses, skirts and tops. So, to fight the winter doldrums spend a few moments flipping through all the beautiful clothes you will be wearing as the weather starts to warm.

Hello Sailor

It may still be January with it’s chilly, gray days and stores filled to the brim with picked over sale merchandise, but two warmer than normal, sunny days have me looking ahead to spring.

Navy is always a good way to transition to spring and you often see it pop up in many early-spring collections. It less harsh than black but doesn’t scream spring like bright or pastel colors and it works well into your current wardrobe. It’s no wonder that these two items from designer Markus Lupfer caught my attention, they have a springy look but can easily be worn now layered and with denim. Both items available at www.net-a-porter.com.

I love this cute, quirky Hello Sailor extra long t-shirt, it will look great worn with skinny jeans and booties layered under a scarf and light colored cardigan; come spring it will be just as versatile worn with baggy boyfriend jeans and flats or paired with worn chinos and Jack Purcell shoes.

There has been a fair amount of buzzing that stripes will be hot for spring and this double layered cardigan will be perfect to wear now and when spring finally pushes winter away. It provides you an easy way to wear layers and stripes while looking bright and fresh. Pair it now with a crisp white button down and dark denim and wear it later with skinny cropped jeans, a white tank and flats. It will even look cute worn over a gauzy summer dress. The stripes are far apart and separated a bit by the blue under layer so they won’t make you look wider.

Go Bananas

I had a tantalizing offer in my e-mail inbox from Banana Republic advertising 30% off new arrivals for four days, (April 6-April 9). Rarely do you get such a great offer on brand new merchandise. I hopped on the world wide web and pointed my browser to www.bananarepublic.com to check out the new arrivals on sale and was happily surprised by the great selection of perfect, must have basics for spring. Many of these items will become go to favorites that will carry you from spring into summer effortlessly. Since the sale is only for online merchandise check it out at www.bananarepublic.com and use code NEW30 at checkout.

PS You can also get 30% off new arrivals at www.gap.com and www.oldnavy.com.

A perfect spring dress, layer with a cardigan, fitted jacket or denim jacket for cooler days and then pair with chunky wooden heel shoes for a summer wedding or party.

A crisp white cotton tunic paired with denim bermudas combine to make a super chic summer outfit.

Banana Republic always has a great selection of gorgeous jewelry at very reasonable prices (I heard a rumor awhile back that their jewelry looks so good because Chan Luu helps design it, not sure if it is true, but it would explain alot).

Shiny Style

Metallics remain at the forefront of shiny style for spring. Metallic fabrics and shoes add a sophisticated luxe look to any outfit and these peep toe flats by Naughty Monkey are an easy way to add kick to your spring wardrobe. They will look easily at home with a sharp pencil skirt or straight leg jeans, adding a punch of style to any outfit. The bronze gold paired with pewter makes them a flashy neutral that will go with any color. Available at www.mimisboutique.com and www.zappos.com.
